Well after significantly improving following lots of tactical lessons plus the HTTR Strat Guide - i've managed to get decent results in Hofen Ho Down.

I moved on to the scenario 'we fight and die here' and just finishing at 4am i was ooooh so close to a decisive victory as you can see with .1 separating me!

Well done. It's a much tougher scenario than Hofen (as Axis), I think, so pat yourself on the back. You seem to have got the Dom, which the Big Red 1 stopped happening, historically, let alone overwhelming Butgenbach.

How did you do it, as a matter of interest (quick summary?)? Did you station units around the back of Butgenbach to cut off his reinforcements? I've always assumed something like that must be done as I have never got further than a draw just slugging it out along obvious routes.

I'll attempt to explain my plan and how it panned out.

Firstly, the frontal assault, even at night up the hill was dismissed. instead i managed to find decent overwatch locations for direct fire support, and push most of my PzGrens up the road forming at Morschheck and attacking the high ground at night. They managed to push the Amis out of the high ground on day 2, and left me in a good position to block the retreat from the enemy trapped to the north west.

As you can see from the next picture i had taken dom by Day 2, however i wasted a pzrgren battalion who were on the high ground on a limb and wouldn't withdraw in time, very annoying.

Next the FJs helped keep the reinforcements at bay for my push on to Butgenbach, whilst i concentrated on getting my panzers and flaks into good supporting positions, and pummelled the amis in the killing zones

And finally here is the resulting overall position just before the end, with reinforcement Fus btln closing up the pocket formed on my right flank by the flanking manoeuvre.


I am very open to advice on how to better carry out this task, however have been trying to put into practice a battle of manoeuvre and avoiding all frontal assaults if i can help it whilst supporting units actively with indirect and direct fires.

Hyva plani! Seems to have worked. Could you have pushed the FJ into Oberweywertz, I wonder? That would have clinched it. But even if you got them in they probably wouldn't have had the strength to clear it. Still, denying the Allies Oberweywertz might have been enough. Not sure. You controlled the arty yourself, directly?

Yes, I find the concentration of fires can devastate positions and I was impressed with the nebels. When I try to attach arty to a bttln directly I never get the same effect it seems.

I'll be starting an aar tonight - what scenario would be best anyone?

Piper's Race, as Axis, interesting for me, as unwinnable, I think. For me, anyway....

+1 on Peiper's Race..I'm currently playing this and having problems everywhere on the second day.

Just finishing the last 12 hours of pipers race and it'll be up in the aar forum. It was a much larger scale and iv made mistakes but could go either way at this stage!
