Fortified zone

Silly question, and I did look thru the manual for this- what is the difference between creating a fortified zone using AP points and just letting the unit fortify on its own?
1) Is the fortified zone = to 1, 2, 3, 4
2) Will units positioned there still fortfiy the hex?
3) Is one better than the other (other than creating one costs 4 AP points but appears immediately and you don't need a unit there)?

You need to have a fortified zone in a hex for the hex to go beyond level 3.  Or beyond level 2 if you're not adjacent to an enemy.  It's in the US_Letter manual towards the back amongst the changes.

A fortified zone is not a fortification by itself but will help you build fortifications in the hex, especially if you attach some construction SUs to it.

Thanks for the reply. So eventually a fortification zone will build a level 1 fort, even without attaching any additional construction SUs to it? (in another words, without placing a combat unit in it)

Thats not working, you can get forts to level 3 without FZ's and 4 in some cases.

Fortified zones on their own will build up to level 3 or 4 eventually even without combats or support units attached. It can take a very long time however.

Cheers!

I think there was a rule change somewheres in which hexes adjacent to a hex with a fort unit can also entrench to level 3 and maybe 4(?) as well. And this does seem to work as far as I have been able to tell from my various PBEMs. I'm finding it easier to create level 3 entrenchments in hexes in, or adjacent to fort units than trying to create level 3 entrenchments within hexes not adjacent to, or within a hex with a fort unit.
