I tried the Loshiem gap and after two and a half ours my troops where getting battered. For a change I had decided to micromanage more..giving all orders to battalion but giving individual orders to support guns and Mortars (I did find I split my forces more giving attack orders to a battalion to take a town and another battalion to take another town where if I'd been giving orders to regiment they'd have gone for just one town. I also made a mistake of delaying the attack to try and time assaults (this failed miserably)

Anyway I quit after two hours of battle seeing at least 5 or 6 of my coys routing or in a desperate state. The AAR stated I had lost 296 men all mainly due to bombardment. I had killed 8 allies!

So I decided to run the same two hours but this time give out orders to regiment (in large scenarios the HQ I, 90% of the time give, orders to). Well things seemed abit better. This time I had lost 108 men (96) through bombardment) and killed 27 allies.

Does anyone else have a tendency when playing a scenario by giving orders to a low level HQ (like battalion) find they split up their forces more? It's obviously a bad habit that I wouldn't do again. I suppsoe you feel you can do more as you have more control. It backfired massively though.


Oh I also hate Allied Arty!

Dave, I have a save here of a mortar platoon leading the battalion into a town so was the forward unti in a move with attack box ticked. Where do I send it to?

I agree.  Played the tutorial a couple of times and I also get better results when ordering at the regiment level.  Battalions are more coherent and more efficient that way but it takes more time to prepare the attack.  So if you want quick results against small forces with elaborate flanking maneuvers, battalion micromanagement is ok.  But when it comes to major frontal assaults against a major defending units, then regiment level is best (in my opinion).

Battalion micromanagement (or even company micromanagement) is useful in defense and securing lines as you can place units exactly where you want them to be.

No comment about arty as I have not played the game extensively.
