Started a new Babeslite campaign 26B, extended map, against bluebook as the IJ commander. Bluebook followed at least one of my AARs when I played as the Allied, I guess he has a good view of how I act and, the map and the initial settings being what they always are, he should have an idea what I usually defend, how and what I have on hand the first couple of months so I expect this to be bloodier for me than usual. The game is one month ahead, from other players' experience I decided to do the AAR with a delay not to cause any severe "intel problem" [:D]

then it's Houston to run into a Japanese SC TF that easily whipes the floor with the heavy cruiser... Houston nearly fired all her main gun ammo for one fridging hit on an enemy destroyer, this again reminds me about how strange naval combat and ammo expenditure was actually coded 10 years ago... how many hundreds of 8 inch shells would Houston carry? If this would be real life, I guess together with the secondary armament Houston must have fired something like a thousand shells in bright daylight and scored ONE hit on an enemy DD... I don't give a sh*t on the Allied Navy, everything from a DD to a BB just sucks in the game and I am aware it is what it is but if I really try to think about real life then this just makes me shaking my head... ONE HIT for all the main gun ammo she carries...

wow, 28 torpedo hits on the BBs alone and then there are those ongoing complaints of IJ players how bad the initial strike on PH is modelled, bad in terms of how the game cheats on the poor IJ players? Pfff... one BB sinks outright, two more are going to sink and the rest is so heavily damaged they will stay in Hawaii's shipyard for the rest of the war... and then? Sure, every complaining IJ player orders KB to retire after one day because of realism... or the other way around? You can bet on the IJ player flying one, two or three more strikes against the US battlefleet...

this single strike was devasting, caused far more damage than real life's attack and I bet it won't be the only strike... not saying the real life strike couldn't sink more than the TWO BB that were actually sunk (IJ players seem to ignore real life all the time thinking there were at least 5 BB sunk) but this strike already did more BB in than real life...

what a start...

here's how the battlefleet at PH looked like after the devastating attack, you can imagine what happens to ships on fire while having nearly 100 flt damage and one BB sunk during the attack already... if those three additional BBs in danger of sinking also go down then the intial strike sunk four BB already...

In my current game with Andav he went heavy on the ships and light on the airfield. Blasted the ships. He stayed for a second day but resistance was fierce. 6 BB sunk and lots of other ship damage. But the second day not so much, as the 2 x BB that sunk that day were doomed by high fires and flooding anyway, even at Pearl. He lost a bunch of planes the second day and said it wasn't worth staying for it.

In my case, it was not worth the second day. The main problem was I did very little damage to the airfield despite having pretty much every Val on airfield attack. While sinking a bunch of BBs is pretty sexy, I whiffed on destroying the fighters and the PBYs so there was pretty stout resistance. Plus the flak was pretty horrid. We play the mod with reduced cargo space so hitting Manila and Singapore is probably the best option. Killing subs at Manila is way more important then BBs at Pearl.

good to have the well know readers aboard. [:)] The other AAR and the PBEM stopped as I cancelled it as it turned out to be just horrible slow and we were far away from a fast paced game as it was expected and agreed to be so I had draw the line at some point as I didn't want to spend four years to complete a campaign. I have another slooow one again 1eyedjacks but this moves along as the expected speed and I wanted a "main" PBEM that moves at the used speed, aiming at 15-20 turns a week depending on the action of course.

airlosses at PH were light yesterday so I've set my Cap to intercept the enemy, well expecting enemy sweeps.... what I didn't expect to happen would be those ceiling sweeps by my opponent starting right on day one with the well known usual results of ongoing dives that shred my squadrons... this turns out to be a common tactic also in the coming turns and I mentioned this in one of my emails, basically saying what is good for the goose... and bluebook said he is well aware of 40k+ sweeping P-47 and P-51 which means we will go with the crazy strato sweeps as I never found an acceptable working hr anyway...

This is a Babes campaign and even there, with TWO strikes, the total flak losses are not even 50% of what KB suffered in real life on day ONE. And you might have noticed, the damned Kates attacked at 5000ft!!!! where flak should be far more severe than the 9000ft they bombed in real life... poor Japs... using the strato sweep feature the enemy managed to achieve a 3:1 vs my fighters that outnumbered the enemy nearly 3:1...

I don't know why I bother, but anyway, here goes:

Real-life Japanese aircraft losses at Pearl Harbor were 29 - 9x A6M2s, 15x D3A1s, and 5x B5N2s.

In real life, the Japanese A6M2s strafed and thus a number were shot down by anti-aircraft fire. Here your opponent has his A6M2s sweeping at 15,000ft and, I'm assuming, escorting at 10,000 ft, thus no surprises at the lack of A6M2s shot down. So, we're down to 20.

While your combat reports indicate only the following aircraft losses during the first day's Pearl Harbor strike, you cannot rely on the combat report as being accurate at all. In this case, the CR indicates 3 Kates and 4 Vals shot down by flak (with 14 Kates damaged and 10 Vals damaged).

Well, analysing the aircraft losses you've posted, the ACTUAL losses BlueBook suffered on that Pearl Harbor strike were as follows:

7 Kates (4 flak, 3 ops)
15 Vals (11 flak, 4 ops)

So your opponent lost 22 aircraft. I can assure you if he had set A6M2s to strafe or airfield attack, the losses would be much higher. Very much in line with what happened historically. But you just love your bloody rants, don't you!

On the second day, your combat reports indicates losses of 5 Kates shot down by flak and 18 damaged, and 5 Vals shot down air-to-air.

But actual losses to BlueBook were 16 Kates (including 5 to ops) and 8 Vals!

In two days he has lost 23 Kates and 23 Vals.

lol, don't know why I bother, but if you really think the loss list is correct then I can't help you anyway. Bluebook sure has NOT lost 23 Kates and 23 Vals, just because that list shows those losses. They are for sure far lower. In my last AAR I have posted losses of Zeroes that went over 400 at some point, a couple of turns later, the losses were down to 300 (and probably still higher than actual losses).

And now why do you think real life losses were higher to the dive bombers? And from what alt were the real life Kates bombing? From 5000ft? Look for info which altitude the converted shells needed. And then go figure what THAT alt meant in terms of flak compared to the 5000ft. Then add this all up and get your numbers right please.

As soon as you figure that out, you may pay some attention.

funnily though, you seem to think that I had as many aircraft at Pearl Harbour as in real life. You seem to be one of those IJ fantasy players that think they should get all the hindsight while the Allied should play like a sheep without hindsight. You have one GUESS why I lost so few aircraft at Pearl. Wonder if you'll be able to figure out. OOOOHHHHH, how could an Allied player dare to do this, how could he, using hindsight and expecting a strike on PH? OOOOHHHHH

edit for you: the aircraft weren't there, just in case you fail to notice. But I guess you first have to figure out the losses to start with, let alone that you fail to get the picture what it means attacking at 5000ft or at 10000ft.

Some more info if you wonder why they weren't there, what happens if you set a squadron to 100% perform mission "x"? What happens if they perform that mission?


and just to point it out for you, the rant was directed at the JFBs that keep bashing the game for inaccuracy aka Allied Edition which is nothing but ridicoulos lately. It's a game and was highly turned into the Japanese direction as to keep it interesting for any Japanese player as I have been in 75% of all my PBEM so far and I don't fail to realize that I get options and possibilities that are so far from real life the Japanese didn't even think about it in their best fantasies.

It is a Castor Troy AAR. It is where he rants and raves about things. It is part of what makes it so entertaining.

in this PBEM it finally worked to see my minesweepers leaving Manila first so the rest of the ships doesn't run into the usual mines at Bataan... to make sure, I have not ordered a single sub out of Manila (put them into TFs though) as last time I had four subs running into sub laid mines at Bataan...

Thanks to some close observation of what was actually happening I learned early on that task forces assigned to leave a port on a given day leave in the order they are created.

At Manila on Dec. 8 it is CRUCIAL to make the minesweeper TFs the first TFs created. They will then lead the procession through the minefields.

As for the rants, I just love em, as most folks here know I am an avowed AFB. Keep up the good work!
