Now, what about the manual?

This game is so complex that it really does require a user manual while playing, not only to learn, but to understand whats happening at times. The game has evolved through updates such that the original manual is all but useless. Its good that all the changes are listed as addendum to the manual but it's gotten almost impossible to find things because there is no organization to them other than chronological.
I know rewriting the manual would be a HUGE task and probably won't happen, but could there possibly be some organized index created that would help find any changes to say the fortification process, for example, from the original manual?

Hi all,
All that you need is updated manual "WITE-Manual-[US_LETTER].pdf" ...
Features:
The document is TOC jumpable and it contains all text and pictures the original manual had plus all community sighted errors and all known "forgotten rules" that we discovered since release!
Whole document is also "section jumpable" (i.e. if you click on "See section xx.yy.zz" you would jump to that section) and you can easily go back to where you jumped from via "back button" in your PDF reader!
At the end of manual there is Addendum which contains all changes added to rules since the release - thus there is no need to have several different documents opened.
Still missing:
I hoped and thought that I will be able to finish move to proper place of all new stuff from addendum by now but that was not to be... I am still continuing my effort there... sorry for the delay guys... this is massive undertaking and no other game tried that after release (not even UV, WitP and WitP-AE)...

I'm not sure you followed what I was asking or perhaps I explained myself poorly.
The Addendum shows changes in rules that have come from updates along the way...but.... the manual, even the US letter one, does not have these written in yet...Correct?
For example.. lets say I am reading about how fort construction works. We all know the rules governing this were changed from the original manual by some update but I don't know which one and will need to read back through the Addendum until I find it. What I would like to see is an index that will tell me that fort rule changes can be found in Addendum so and so....or am I just being lazy?

As Apollo11 noted (and he deserves thanks for this) an updated manual is included in every update. Check the latest version in 1.06.04. It's not fancy, but it integrates the changes to the game into the manual text.

Thanks Apollo and no offense Eric but I have yet to find anywhere an ammendment to the manual that you speak of. I am using the Ammended version (US LETTER) correct? I have been randomly picking out rule changes that appear in the patch notes and checking aginst the rule in the manual and can't find (yet) any ammendments even when it involved only a simple change like a single number.
I'm not trying to complain. I think this manual is the finest work in War Game history even if it has been outdated by game updates and improvements. Am I looking at the correct manual?

IOW, the letter manual is uptodate; look at the version number on the first page.

I have not yet checked the usletter under the 1.06 update, but under 1.05 GBS is correct. The new rule changes are only an addendum. Not in the body of the manuel. At least as far as the mp supply distance for hq buildup is concerned.

My bad guys, I should have double-checked that. The plan is to integrate it into the text and I thought we'd made more progress on that than we had.

Leo reports that his goal is to get all of the changes in the addendum incorporated into the main text of the living manual (US Letter) by the end of March. No promises, but that's the goal.

Might be (I was not aware of that at the time I originaly wrote my post above) but WitE addendum alone is 35 A4 / US Letter sizes pages (and that without any bugfixes listed at all)... I somehow doubt that good people for "Empires in Arms" improved the game that much...[;)]

No 'might be' about it. Like you, I volunteered to update the EiA manual and revised it to include all changes, plus added content. The game has its own issues and it's better than it was, and still has room to improve. My only point in bringing this up is to cheer you on to for your efforts (Thank You!) and encourage others to help with other games. As complex games like these get patched and features get added or changed, the original manuals quickly become outdated. It would be nice to see all games provide updated documentation with patch releases. But this does require extra effort, so it's nice to have volunteers take on the challenge. [:)]
