Is there some way to make city names and river names display on the map? It is annoying to have to mouse around and find a city.

Also, is there any kind of status screen available in game that shows how you are doing in the current battle, Kills, Loses, Pts spent, pts earned, Objectives earned etc...?

I'm sorry but I'm afraid the answer is no for both questions.
You can only have kill stats only for the whole campaign and not for each scenario.
