Combat causes game to freeze

Having figured out one issue (resolution not working on my Alien -- fixed!), now the game freezes as soon as any combat occurs on the first turn. Once it was an ASW attack by the Ward, or air strikes on Pearl. In any case, the attack begins, but shortly after the attack begins, the game freezes. The attack sounds stop, but my mouse still moves around on the screen (not sure if that means anything). I can't close the attack window, and can only exit the game via CTL-ALT-DEL.
Any thoughts anyone? Thx in advance.

Attach a zipped save her and I'll see if it is the code.

Ok, here you go. The only save is the first turn, so I'm not sure how helpful it will be. thx for checking.

I ran the turn successfully.
Try renaming the Sound folder and see if plays without sound.

Tried without sound, game still froze. This is mighty irritating. Thanks for the suggestion.
Anyone have other thoughts?

If you renamed the sound folder and that did not work, I would try a complete new install.

Unfortunately, reinstall didn't fix it either. Guess I have to give up on this game...

I've seen a couple of guys with Alienware rigs on this forum that had some game issues. Not sure whether they were resolved or not. Make sure all the graphic, sound drivers and dx are up to date. Also rename both the sound and video to nosound novideo.
Otherwise I'd post a dxdiag and some machine / os specs and see if we can work the problem. VMWare with another OS might be an option here too ...
