I've got a quad core as well, and all I've got running is the widescreen switch. AE tends to stumble a bit when it comes to multi-core machines and none of the switches have ever done a good job for me.

Ahh, ok, it isn't just me. I ended up about the same as well. Thought maybe it was my perception (or lack thereof [;)])

I have a dual core and it seems to load faster if I use either -cpu1 or -cpu2. If I don't use a cpu switch it keeps changing form one core to the other.

Same for me. Limiting the game to using only 1 of the cores dramatically reduced lag.

I have a Core i7, no over-clocking. I use:

-altFont -multiaudio -archive -dd_sw -cpu4 -fd -px1680 -py1050

Works well. I found that the -dd_sw was critical to getting it to behave.

What does multiaudio, archive, and fd do?[:D]

-multiaudio : Invokes a fix that changes audio timing for multicore machines.

-archive : Put data reports in archive directory

-fd : Full screen, daily autosaves

Archive is pretty cool. It makes a sub-folder where a copy of all the reports go. Useful in researching two-year-old battles in repsonse to a question on the forum. Can get pretty big--in excess of a gig--but not bad to have if you need back data. If you're really anally-retentive you could dump the folder to external storage and keep a permanent record of your war for your grandkids to read, except by then the format won't be readable, so they'll just laugh at you. [:)]

From trial and error I have gotten WitPAE to work well, my switches are as follows:

Full Screen:

-SingleCpuOrders -cpu2 -multiaudio -skipVideo -deepColor -fd -px1600 -py900 -altFont -r

Windowed:

-SingleCpuOrders -cpu2 -multiaudio -skipVideo -wd -px800 -py600 -altFont -r

This is no a triple core AMD Phenom laptop with a ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5xxx card
