"Can't set screen mode" error

I recently bought a new computer. When attempting to install War Plan Orange for the first time on the new PC, I received the following error message after clicking on "play" from the main menu: "can't set screen mode."
I'm trying to run the game on a 2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2320 processor, Windows 7 Home Premium, an Nvidia Geforce graphics card, on a 23-inch widescreen monitor with the resolution set at 1920x1080 landscape resolution (the same as my previous computer, which also had Windows 7 Home Premium and on which War Plan Orange ran without any problems).
