Why does the CVE Anzio arrive in May 1943 when Operation Shingle did not happen until January 1944? Or is it a totally unrelated Anzio?
Thanks

whilst this is from
wikipedia so a bit suspect her original name was aparently coral sea and she was renamed to anzio at a later date. I guess the developers chose to use her final name.

Thanks guys so I currently have the CVE Coral Sea (which makes sense) and due to code restrictions and the renaming of ships the decision was taken to name her Anzio from the off.
Cheers

was it common to rename USN ships? I mean, why not just give one of the countless new CVE that name and have the ship keep it's original name?

I don’t know how common it was for the USN to rename ships. But the next ship to have the name Coral Sea was CV-42 launched a year later. At a guess the navy decided that it was more appropriate for a ship named Coral Sea to be a CV rather than CVE. Incidentally CV-42 was later renamed USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and CV-43 became Coral Sea

Most, not all, ship renamings happend before launch. Several Essex class were renamed on the building ways for ships lost. These name then filtered farther down the construction line.

There was also a CVE named Midway that was renamed on the eve of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. I believe it was one of the CVEs lost in that battle. Some of the old salts believed it was bad ju ju to rename a ship, especially on the eve of battle.

i'm sure a lot of you forumites have a copy of that $20 "Jane's Fighting Ships of WWII". It includes lists ships by class, w/ dates 'laid down', 'launched', 'cancelled', etc. many include a parenthesized 'former' name - a ship might have been assigned a name around the time it was ordered, but ended up w/ a different name by the time it was commissioned. it's a bit amusing to think of all the paperwork confusion!
mebbe it was a bit simpler in the Napoleonic era, where a captured enemy ship might retain her original name while serving under a new flag. i'm a bit old-school & am willing to agree that re-naming a commissioned ship might be unlucky - still, i'm glad that USCGC Eagle doesn't retain her former identity.
one moan of mine, is that the ship screen in AE doesn't give the pennant-number (such as CV-6 or DD-364).
