when I download a update/patch I copied it to my game file, do I need to go in and run each file, or with it copied in there did it update?

Generally the file is a .zip or a .exe

If it is a .zip you need to get the file inside, out. The file inside should be an .exe

Double click the .exe or right click and run as admin and this will start an installer program.
