Marine redeployment

Some of you may or may be are not, aware of a recent Aust-USA defence agreement to redeploy marines to the Top End. this is an article on the first arrivals.

This development will take priority over that discussed recently in a thread regarding use of Cocos Island for US drones.
It is part of a much deeper American strategic reorientation in the Pacific.

I was thinking that those Marines are in for a sweet tour. I spent five weeks in Oz on leave in the mid-80s, by myself, with a backpack and an unlimited train pass. Nothing in Europe comes close for day-to-day, action-packed young man fun times. Make of that what you will. [:)]
Good recruiting poster fodder for the Corps I think.

I'm guessing that your five weeks in Oz wasn't in Darwin? From discussions with Aussies in the know...how shall I say this diplomatically...opportunities for eventful sightseeing in the Northern Territories are less universally appreciated than those in more populated Australian communities. [:)]
I imagine that it would be akin to an Aussie exchange officer winding up in either A. San Diego, CA or B. Fort Bliss, TX. Which would offer better recruitment poster fodder in your opinion?

The NT is beautiful, them it pours for the next 6 mths. if the Crocs dont eat you the Water Buffalo will decide to share your piece opf ground.

There is a thread on the political subforum of a sports forum I belong to about this. Someone jsut posted "Australia results in +2 troops per turn and is easy to defend. Solid strategic move."
I was tempted to respond that Darwin is at the end of a long, inconsistent supply line and is easily cut off from the Australian supply centers but figured that no one there would understand...

Nope, not Darwin. But Cairns isn't that long a flight.

Nope, not Darwin. But Cairns isn't that long a flight.
2-3 hrs takes you a lng way.
But its comparing a tropical resort to some god forsaken place at the end of a desert.

Let's not forget the Aussies being relieved of manning the Cocos.
The Aussies seem not to care as their news, according to my opponent, centers on Canberra and the south.

Actually, Darwin's a nice place to visit -- for a week. As on Guam (whence I deployed to Darwin), much longer can be a tribulation unless you happen to enjoy the particular activities of the area. And, of course, I was there outside the rainy season.

I spent six weeks on Guam, and I'd take six months at Darwin over that again.

In the longer term my money is on the Marines for Darwin coming from Okinawa. In the long run there will be no marines based at Okinawa and I seriously doubt they could fit many more marines on Guam than the currect relocation plans envisage.
