Purchase or not?

One of my old favorites was Apple IIe SSI/Grisby USAAF with a dozen vs human campaign games in the 1980s. I have Talonsoft/Grisby 12 O'Clock High but graphics only functional and my intended opponent running Microsoft Vista can never find files the game creates. So is this game played (will I be able to find an opponent) and is it better or just more complicated than the Talonsoft predecessor? I own UCV, WITH, WBTS, and EastFront and seems the games are far more complicated and would likely displace many of my other discretionary activities to actually learn & play.

Bill, there are a few ppl still playing this game. compared to rthe Talon releases, the game has improved "under the hood". The interface is still the zillion click-festival per turn. There are no major changes or improvements in the interface, only a few improvements. The production interface has improved, it shows now better what is needed to produce what but there is still a lot of room for improvements.
The forum is, as you can see almost dead. I once found an PBEM opponent, but the game lasts only 3 or four turns ?? [8|]
If you like, I'll can give you a shot on a pbem. I am eager to play BOB 40 Full Campaign as the defender (British side) to see the game mechanics.
"Better" well it depends how do you definate it. I still love the old GG titels as well but I wont play them again as compared to newer releases, there are always improvements made on the code here and there. Therefore I'll go with the newer releases and leave where the old titels belong: in my memory only.

I just fired up the game after probably 2 years not playing. I'm hooked again. I started an AAR to track my play - it's Allies against the AI in the 1943 campaign. Once I get a screencap program, it should be more interesting. I say buy it!

Thank you for the insight. I can play Talonsoft version which I own; my vista opponent has issues but I cant resolved them on skype. I do not own matrix Eagle day. I don't have BOB either. I will not likely make the purchase. My current time investment will in Uncommon Valor, War Between the States, War in the East and War In the Pacific-AE. Until I actually play one of these, I do not to play more.
Play past play of USAAF on an Apple IIE vs many human opponents was much enjoyed in the 10980s.

I will plan on buying it and contacting you in the future. Although I have my original Apple IIe, extended use may kill the 1983 machine. I have found playing AI not a good use of time and prefer the changing tactics of a human opponent. Emulators are fine but the interface is dated and game runs far too fast on modern machines.
The matrix games came out the same year as the [previous] talonsoft game so I expect is largely the same game with a backgroup tweaks you spoke of.
Vista has and issue with the 16 bit installers on early cd games such as the Talonsoft. Opponent may find the same issue with the matrix game.
I have one 30 year boardgame opponent from the 1980s that we are now playing games by email. Have an Uncommon Valor campaign going know. PLan on adding a War in the Pacific mid May, War in the East, War Between the States and the air war game. This is a decade long committement so the first one to die forfiets the games in progress.
Once I have the Matrix game in hand, will contact you for a mini-campaign or campaign.

I am going to buy it as it is still available. I would like to line up for a pbem game. I have another that has more free time than I (we both played USAAF on my apple IIe in the 1980s). He has issues with Talonsoft on Vista, game files created are placed in a hiddent directory somewhere I guess. As Talonsoft is out of business, need not tinker with it anymore.

Oliver, I now have the game. Am finding my multiple Uncommon Valor games are still leaving gaps in my free time. Will give you first shot at me if you want to start a PBEM before I post on the Opponents Wanted page.

I am wondering what do I do with the nightfighters as Axis. They will be slaughtered in day will they not?

You seem to be using the term night fighter when you mean day bomber destroyer. If you really mean flying night fighter units during the day then you need to know that it is very tricky to pull off and you can get your night units slaughtered that way.
Night units are asleep during the day and it takes an hour after you give the order to get them up and into the air. They are NOT dog-fighters. If they meet even lousy escort fighters they will get massacred. It is probably best for you to leave them on the ground in daylight until you get an idea what you are doing.
Also, some consider using them in daylight to be unrealistic.

Ok I guess its safe to assume then that any aquadron listed as available is a day fighter of some sort?
Ergo I just have to match the right squadrona against the right enemy.

No. If it is daytime and a unit has a delay of 63 minuets then it is a night fighter unit. (typically NJG)
Usually (but not always) a day German bomber destroyer unit will have ZG in its name. They are Me 110B-2, Me 210, Me 410, and Ju88G-6a. Use them to attack bombers (usually the heavy bombers) after the escorts are turned back.
Base them back from the coast so that they need to fly forward to engage so when they turn for home they are going away from England so they don't meet fighter sweeps or fresh escorts.
And you need to move this discussion to its own thread now. Please don't post further on this topic in this thread.
