I understand how grouping works, now, as well as hiding, but the second tutorial scenario still kicks my butt. There just doesn't seem to be enough time to get to the victory hex.

Don't worry, it comes with practice. This is 'the Gap' correct? Keep moving forward, use caps and/or group fire to increase your probability of hitting/damaging them but don't leave your flanks hanging. You should be able to reach the VP hex by the third turn.
