Controlling an objective hex

I just had a situation in "The Gap" scenario, where my German unit took the stone building on the last turn (the last clock, which I think is a turn).

However, the Russians destroyed my unit on the last action of the game, so the stone building was unoccupied when the game ended. At the game end, I was still given credit for owning the building, and received the VPs and won the game.

So, my question is, does a unit have to occupy an objective hex to receive VPs at the end of the turn, or is it the last side that occupies the hex gets the VPs, regardless if they are still in the hex at the end of the game or not.

It's last person to occupy the hex, just like the board game.

Ok thanks! I'm not familiar with the boardgame, so I was wondering.
