Has anyone been ab le to figure out how the stacking rules work? I'm not taking about a max of 3 units. My question is more to how is it decided which unit is placed where in the stacking order?

Anyone?

This is something we can't control (order of show of stacked units)...

I think the most senior unit is on top (ie, the one with the lowest unit ID number) but am not sure...

"We" meaning who? Surely the developers should be able to control what unit is shown on top? Though I can understand if it would be complicated to change.

@ glvaca: very interesting question. Because I was thinking about "hiding" top notch units so as to conceal preparation for an offensive.

I would argue that tank units should always be on top, since tanks would be easier to spot. But of course that's not how it works.

Let's argue on how it should work when we know how it works [;)]
Hmmm ID, you mean 72nd Div would be lower than 1st Div?
How does that interact with airbases and HQ's among others?

No, each unit has a unique unit ID, I think you can see it in the unit detail window. I'm not sure if this is how it works, but this is my recollection. I'll check next time I open the game.

And come on, it is much more fun to argue first, then establish the facts!

I think I worked it out that the first unit into the hex was on top and the rest followed, but that was, like version 1.01 when I did it and who knows if I was even correct at that time!

well, I just looked at about 100 stacks in my game, and in every case the unit with the HIGHER unit ID was on top (ie, I had it backwards). The unit ID is the big white number at the top of the unit detail screen.

This would explain why we always see the Fortified Zones.

The "We" are WitE developers... [;)]

ALPHA / BETA testers asked Gary about this years ago (2 years before WitE was released) and, unfortunately, there was no easy way of programming user selected order of stacked units... thus this is something that can't be done...

Thanks for the answer!

You say "user selected". But how abot a preset order that was a little more logical? For example always largest unit on top or armor on top etc?

We suggested all kind of variations even with various keyboard shortcuts (largest unit with biggest CV on top, HQs on top, armor on top etc.)... but it all boils down to fact that it would take too much programming effort that can be utilized better elsewhere and thus this was not done for WitE...
