orphaned carrier airgroups

Carrier airgroups may make it to a land base when the carrier is sunk. Once rebuilt, should they be used as a land based air unit or find a carrier without planes such as the Long Island. If the carrier is simply badly damaged, no longer air-operation and sent for and extended repair cycle, should the carrier air groups be saved for a later marraige with the returning carrier or used up in a land based role?

The choice is yours. i prefer to use them as training squads on some carrier that is in safe area.

Again, the choice is yours, but realize that squadrons are not wedded to their carriers. To leave them in a forward area while their carrier returns to port for repair or refit is a valid tactic for a squadron, but not the only one. They can be used to relieve a mauled squadron on another carrier or an airbase, or simply to reinforce an area without risking your carrier to counter-strike or submarine.

I can understand that kitty assassins need to relocate on a regular basis...

if a sqn remnant is 'carrier trained', it's a valuable asset. of course you can use it from a land base, as needed. but you should take a long-term view, and build/train it back to full strength.
a CV arriving as reinf might have a capacity of 90, w/ only 4 sqns of 78 planes embarked. you can add a rebuilt sqn to this CV.
chump carriers such as CVE Long Island aren't useful for combat ops. but you can keep her in port at San Diego or Los Angeles. give her 'carrier-capable' sqns, after 90 days they'll be 'carrier-trained'.
if you've got a partly-ruined CV headed for the shipyards, that's better than being sunk. but she'll be useless after repair, if you can't immediately outfit her w/ planes.

You are so right! Being good means running low on targets.

also you can transfer the pilots out and put them into the surviving carrier squadrons, so you maintain pilot quality on those carriers
