Forgive me for being too lazy to find a link and post it but, youtube also has the full movie dubbed in English if you prefer.

I watched about 2/3 of it a couple of weeks ago and I'm sorry to report I didn't find it to be worth more than 2 stars. I didn't think it was worth sitting through the final 40 minutes.

So what do you guys think is the best movie about the Eastern Front?

I'd say Enemy at the Gates, but I haven't seen very many.

Best WWII movie I've watched (not Eastern Front) is Das Boot. Christ is that movie terrifying. The Eastern Front is unfortunately underrepresented (as in everything), though i have heard there's a really good movie called Cross of Iron that I've never seen anywhere.

Oh yeh Cross of Iron - truly great for the inter relationships of officers and men on the Eastern Front .

Three of four classic lines in that film I will never forget... like...

Come with me and I will show you where the Iron Crosses grow.

I can't find that movie anywhere dammit.

That line remind me, in the soviet war museum in the Kremlin, there's a display of a nazi flag and on top of it there's a bunch of iron crosses scattered about. When I saw the picture of it I had to laugh, because its a fantastic middle finger, but on the other hand it is somewhat sad when you think every one of those was an act of bravery in vain.

EDIT: Found a picture

I bought this on DVD years ago, I was disappointed.
There was a very good Russian made film on the tele not long ago that I can't remember the name of.There was one memorable scene where a Russian tank and a German tank got bogged down close to each other and both crews got out to repair them without bothering each other.
The best Eastern front based film I can think of is another Russian made film, "Come And See".

I thought it was an ultimately disappointing film - shame as it started well.....

Cross of Iron is excellent.

Best WWII film ever? Schindlers List Imo.

I really like this movie (Stalingrad). And it's German, as it should be. Cross of Iron is indeed excellent. If anything, I inevitably smell an admiration for the Germans... And still, when the movie starts you can see nazi crimes (the pictures, whilst the kids sing). Still, Mr Peckinpah could not hide this admiration, I suspect [;)]

hmmm, admiration? Strange you would think that. If anything this is an anti-war movie, nothing I can see shows any admiration towards the Germans or war.

It's true that I can hardly explain it. But my guts clearly detect some sort of admiration [;)]

Let's see: the über very bad nazi (and we talk about politics) soldier who joins the squad mid-film. The guy is a caricature LOL And of course he is there (the script thing) to make sure we notice the GREAT difference between the good soldiers and the evil ones...

As I see it Mr Peckinpah was into gore (when Tarantino was wearing nappies), not sure that makes him an anti-war movie maker. An anti-war movie does not show how great the Germans led by Coburn are. And we have tons of scenes where we can admire Coburn's men tactical genius.

My guts, sorry... [:)]

Peckinpah and anti-war just sound strident to my ears.

Paths of Glory, now that's anti-war [8D]

Hard to make a more anti war film than Das Boot. It's more of a horror film than a war film to my eyes.

I saw a Russian movie called 'Ivanovo detstvo' (Ivan's Childhood), about a young boy who acts as a courier between partisans and the regular army across the German lines. As a war movie it wasn't terribly thrilling, but interesting nonetheless.

Speaking of WW2 movies in general, has anyone seen the German movies about corporal Asch, based on the books by Hans Helmut Kirst? I liked the books a lot, and wonder if the movies might be worth getting hold of. (IIRC, the second book of the trilogy is set at least partially on the eastern front)

The museum's actually in Park Pobedy (Victory Park) a couple of km from the Kremlin, to the south west.

It's a chilling display. The flag and iron crosses are in a glass / perspex case, pretty much at floor level. The building has high ceilings throughout, with many displays of Soviet war memoriabilia along the walls and around the room, then at boot level there are the remnants of the symbols of the Nazis.

I am reminded of the words:

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look on my works ye mighty and despair.

I have only seen pictures of it. No doubt meant to be Russian propaganda on how the might of communism destroyed the nazis. Always wonder in amazement of course how the Germans fought two world wars to be the leading economic power in Europe only to lose both world wars and become the leading ecomic power in Europe . Thanks Stalin and communism .

I did not like the movie either. seemed more a political movie and total trashing of german officers. Some of the combat scenes were realy cool tho. I think that movie about hitlers last days were produced by the same guys?

Hi all,

All post WWII German war movies are anti-war movies by default... [;)]

You will never see (at least i don't recall it - and I have see them plenty) any movie that glorifies German army and/or officers but they often honor individual soldiers as individual persons...
