Respawn?

In the editor scenario data screen, what exactly does the re-spawn do? I would guess it causes the lost unit to re-appear at some point in time, but what if it is an archaic type? When playing as the Japanese and you lose, say a freighter. Does a same class freighter appear at a later date? Are you allowed to start building a same class freighter? or are you allowed to start constructing a type, i.e. freighter and get to select a class? Thanks.

Respawn is something from the old WitP which is still there in the code, but is not done as much in AE.

Small craft like midget subs, PT Boats, barges, etc. will be replaced with essentially the same craft after a waiting period. US carriers and cruisers as well as Australian cruisers can also be respawned after a random period which is a minimum of a year. The carriers are respawned as Essex class and the cruisers are one of the newer CLs or CAs. In WitP this represented the US's ability to make good losses in large ships.

The scenario designers in AE instead decided to include all the historic hulls with the original name suffixed with a II and the ability to rename the ship while under construction. So in the stock scenarios the only things that respawn are the small craft that can be created at a base with the buttons on the base screen. The ability to respawn larger ships is still there, but I don't think anyone has used it in a mod. (Which does mean that something done in a patch could have broken the capability.)

I don't know what should happen if you set a ship type to respawn that never had the capability.

Checking the "Use Respawn" box will activate the Automatic Ship Replacements. Please see section 16.1.1 of the manual for details.

In brief, an American CV sunk before 1944 will be replaced by an Essex-class CV.
An American or Australian CA sunk before 1944 will be replaced by either a Baltimore-class CA or a Cleveland-class CL.
Japanese midget subs will be replaced with Type "D" midget subs.

Other types of ships, such as BBs, DDs, AKs, APs, or Tankers, will not respawn.

Please note that none of the official scenarios have "Use Respawn" on. Neither, AFAIK, do any of the more popular mods, such as the "Babes" series or the "RA" series. Also note that having "Use Respawn" on will prevent you from renaming any ships in-game, and that any eligible ship sunk will respawn with the same name.
