Might as well let everyone in on it.

Here's a quick guide on how I do it - the same process works for positioning aircraft sides on backgrounds - assuming the files are the same size in pixels

Open the shil in MS Paint
Zoom in as much as possible
Select white as the current colour
Flood-fill (pouring paint-can icon) the pink background with white
Check for any remaining isolated pink pixels and convert them to white
Edit/Select All
Edit/Copy
Close MS Paint
Open a background file in MS Paint
Image/Draw Opaque
Edit/Paste
File/Save As

In order to avoid mistakenly saving over the background files by clicking Save instead of Save As, I recommend setting them to read-only.
