Strategic movement for ground units

Post by margeorg »

Hello,

in section 8.2.1 the manual states: "The Allies can utilize Strategic OpMode on rail lines and Main Roads.". However, I have not yet been able to move a ground unit via major (grey) roads when in strategic mode. I know that the destination must be a friendly base. Is this a known bug, or is the manual incorrect here?

Show us a picture - it's the only way to be sure with the "road overlay enabled."

Not all allied units can strat move on major roads. From memory some seabee/naval construction units, chinese units etc can't. Most of the US units can though.

I think if the unit has motorized support in it's TO&E then it can utilize Strat Movement.

Lifer, I can't find that in the manual. Where did you read that? Hal

all magic to me, i just try strat and see if the RR/RD option comes up.

manuals(snort) we don't need no manuals.

The presence or absence of motorised support in a LCU has absolutely nothing to do with whether strategic road movement is possible. Its availability is solely dependent on:

(a) the nationality of the LCU (American and British Empire), and
(b) the presence of grey roads

Read this thread for greater details:

Ah,

nationality. I tried it with chinese units, thinking they would qualify as "the allied" :D

Yes you have to learn to live with the chinese who move slower than anyone else and therefore get 'bounced' by the Japanese all the time....

No relation to the terrain, its just the 'way it is'.......

Alfred I still can't strat move USN construction battalions along grey roads- only railway. I've confirmed this on separate units ccurrent's based in India (Kohima to Dimapur) and Australia (Normanton to Charters Towers).

So it's not strictly nationality based either

It has been a long time since I've had to send any construction engineers along a grey road on strategic mode. I don't recall having your problem. Just went into my game and picked non combat units which were already in strategic mode at Sydney, Townsville and Calcutta (waiting to be loaded on to ships) and the game allowed me to set a road destination (Canberra, Normanton and Kohima respectively).

My long ago recollection is that units on strategic road movement travel at a slower rate than if on railway strategic movement but quicker than if in "move" mode.

Also for game purposes the USN is a different nationality to USA.

I had the following kind of issue relating to a contested rail line hex:

I set a unit to strat mode in a rail line base hex, intending to move it out along the rail line. Meanwhile, while packing, an enemy unit has entered the hex. The unit is now fully packed, in this contested hex. (Other units are in defend mode in the same hex holding the base. Of course it is no longer possible to set other units in the hex to strat mode.)

The hex side where the rail line continues, and where the unit in strat mode is supposed to go, wasn't blocked by the enemy, but it seems this unit refuses to move out of the base hex in strat mode but still remains in strat mode. So my question really is if this is correct and the unit needs to unpack again to move?

It can move into the hex with enemy units in Strat mode if you have other units there, but it can't move out of it.
