Because afaik the game can't handle troops that don't belong to the planets owner just sitting on a planet so if any troops are on a planet and they do not belong to that planet's owner they get flagged as invading, that's why, for example, if a planet owned by one of your allies is being invaded you can't reinforce it [:)]
edit: typos [:)]

Yeah, ground battles and troops are not very well implemented.
I've co-invaded the same planet with a "semi-ally" (trade and refueling rights). We won, he got the planet and my troops.
He invaded first. So I reloaded and I invaded first. But the same result. It seems that the faction that invades with the most troops gets everything.
Another problem is the way troops stack as images. It would not be a problem if there was like a 20 group limit per planet. But when you build over like 9000 it's ridiculous. You can't tell the exact size of your force. Simply doing an: troopicon X 56 if you have 56 troops would be a lot more helpfull.
I'm sure all of these things are being looked it for the new expansion.

so you can co invade its just that the bigger force gets the planet and your troops.
i retreated once by loading the troops and general back on the transports.
