Amusing bits you've learned while playing...

Today I got tired of pirates roaming through my territory, setting up bases in unwatched systems. So I decided to do something about that - I put long range scanners on all my freighters. It works great ... except for a noticeable slowdown in the game (until I turned long range scanner off).
So, what have you learned in-game that's both amusing and helpful?

A much more cost effective technique is to learn ultra long range scanners and design an explorer to do the scanning. I build 80 to 100 and have the entire map under surveillance by year 8. Give them enough energy collectors so that no fuel is used while at rest, and park then in systems without any planets is a winner.

I've only been playing for a week but....I designed an ultra-cheap 'sentry tower' monitoring station base that has just a long range scanner and then the absolute minimum required of other modules. Its tiny and super cheap. Its about the cost of a small escort ship. I started spamming these sentry towers in deep space around important locations. Construction ships can build them very quickly since they are so small and only have a few components. Not sure if this is the most economical way to handle this but its been working so far.

Is there a Strategy and Tips thread around here? This could be a good start for one.
