Scenario 2. Historical (heh) first turn. 2 day turns.

Japs lost a mine sub when it hit a Brit mine at Singapore and an AO when Midway based search PBYs dropped a 500 pounder on it and it burned and sank (in addition to the 5 SSxs at Pearl of course). No other Jap fleet damage.

Air losses were 147 allied (including 45 PBY-5s) to 45 Jap.

On to future events:
CV Lexington task group was spotted 10 hexes east of and 3 hexes south of Wake. Wake landing force is turning away from it and heading back to friendly air cover in the Marshalls. Sub patrols assigned in the Wake area in case they give chase to the landing force. Naval air assets sent to Saipan, Truk, and Kwajalein.

The KB has withdrawn to 3 hexes east of French Frigate Shoals. They will join their tankers and cover them on their withdrawl. 2 carriers are dedicated support with the remaining 4 standing by in case the Lex or Enterprise show up.

Landing forces closing on Luzon. Fleet assignment and rendezvous orders issued.

Basic plan:
1) establish forward patrol bases Near Rabul and the eastern DEI.
2) air offensive over Malaya and Luzon.
3) fleet organizational period.
4) determine what style of player Rob is.

Slight lull there, but finally rolling. Dec 9-10 saw a lot of surface action against fleeing ships from HK and Manila.

Started out with a US DD hitting a mine at Bataan and sinking.
*** Night naval action ***

4 Jap DDs engage the 3 Brit DDs coming out of HK. A few minor hits scored by each side. The same forces re-engage. 2 Jap DDs heavily damaged, 1 Brit heavily damaged and all 3 burning. CL Kuma, CL Natori and 4 DDs then engage badly mauling the Brits. DD Hatakaze took 1 hit which resulted in heavy fires. Kuma group engages 3 more times, sinking 1 Brit and hitting the other 2 more. No hits on Jap ships. Hatakaze is still buring heavily, but still with its TF. A lone TB then engages sinking 1 more and raking DD Thanet. She wont see home.

3 Jap TBs caught a convoy of 9 AKs 4 hexes SW of HK torpedoed 1 and sank it and left 2 more badly burning.

1 Jap DD engages 6 AKs 6 hexes from HK and leaves 1 AK heavily damaged and ablaze.

3 TBs engage 6 different AKs 4 hexes from HK and sinks 1 outright and mauls 4 more. 4 more TBs engage the survivors and sink the remaining 5.

I-123 puts 2 fish into an AKl sinking her south of Luzon in the shallows.

Japanese landing force hits Laoag on the north coast of Luzon. The base falls into Japanese hands.

Louisville caught 2 DDs trying to unload at Tarawa. 1 minor hit on each DD and they retired to Makin failing to unload.

I set 6 TFs to patrol south of Hong Kong in 2 lines. The 1st is that French base in China to the SE, the 2nd from Pescadores to the SW, the 3rd is across the bottom 4 hexes out from HK. The 2nd line is 2-3 hexes further out than the first. I use 4 TB TFs of 4 and 2 TFs of 2 CLs and 4 DDs.

CA Kumano and 2 DDs find a TF of 5 AM, 2 AS, 1 AO, 1 AK, 3 AP near Jolo sinking the 5 AMs and the AK and heavily damaging the rest.

2 Jap CLs and 3 DDs engage a US DD near Taytay sinking it for no damage.

Fighter sweep from Formosa of 28 A6Ms to Clark eats up some P-35s and P-40Es (32 intercepted). Follow up attack by 42 Nells escorted by 36 A6Ms encounter only 1 P-40E remaining. Minor hits achieved from 23,000 ft.

50 Sallys bomb Alor Star, finding no resistance. Minor hits scored.

25 Sallys escorted by 24 Nates encounter 6 Buffs at Georgetown. I Buff destroyed on the ground.

15 Sallys hit Victoria point, finding no one home. Moderate damage.

3 Kingfishers attack CA Chokai off the east coast of Palawan (Taytay) for no hits. Choaki and 1 DD are fast transporting a small base force to that base on the east side of it which lands the following day.

7 Seagulls escorted by 10 P-40Es attack the TFs unloading at Laoag with 14 Nates on CAP. 2 bomb hits on 1 AK. Follow-up attack by 21 P-40Bs escorted by 36 P-40Es meet 5 Nates. Wasted effort as the P-40s have no bomb load.

11 B-17Ds raid Babeldaob 9 A5Ms covering. No ships in port, no hits on the base.

9 B-17Ds raid Takao meeting 29 A6Ms and 34 Nates. 1 Betty destroyed on the ground. 1 B-17 downed and 5 more damaged.

29 Sallys escorted by 25 Oscars engage 19 Flying Tigers and 1 Buff over Rangoon. Minor hits destroying 1 Blenheim. Followup sweep of 16 A6Ms met by 12 AVG and 1 Buff destroying 5 for no losses.

28 Ida and Sonjas raid the port at HK finding no targets.

Nuisance raids on Wake by Nells.
Couple of ground strikes in China to interdict Chinese forces.

Afternoon raids 3 Kingfishers miss a CL, 7 Seagulls miss the Chokai. 12 Kates score hits on an AS, the Langley, and sink a AM. 15 Kates and Mables from the Taiyo attack south of Luzon hitting 2 AKs and sinking a PG.

Next day 18 Nells sink a HDML at Sabang.

Anaylsis:

Based on 1 turn is all, it appears the PTs in Hong Kong were disbanded. Rob seems to play a style similar to mine in that he hit likely occupied and likely to be lightly defended ports with his B-17s, naval attack with his land based scouts, and used his CAs in the central Pacific to interdict in again a low-risk, possible high reward manner, and withdrew exposed forces to conserve strength. Very similar styles. Will be interesting to see how this develops further down the road. Gives me a pretty good picture on just what I can get away with [:D]

All air seems to have been moved from the outlying areas of Malaya to Singapore. I was surprised he chose the P-40s to naval attack with. They are useless in that role. The P-35s would have been a better choice, at least they carry bombs. He withdrew his carriers also. Wasnt really sure what to expect there, but I usually err on the side of caution and planned for him to make a charge to pick off either the Wake force or the Guam force. Seems we are alike in that regard as well.

On to my moves. Staged a group of A6Ms into Laoag to provide fighter cover for the Luzon landings. The bulk of the 48th and 16th should hit tomorrow. Not that he seems to have much left in the PI for shipping, but I will have Mavis patrols in place tomorrow as well from Taytay on Palawan and from a base in Mindanao. Forces began embarking to close the ring on Singapore also. These will take a few turns to hit. Eastern DEI landings should occur tomorrow as well as those in the Rabul area.

Damage to my interdiction forces in the South China sea were very light. Lost 2 DDs and 2 more need to repair, but to be expected since he didnt bring his Dutch forces up. The BB TFs are forming on the run and are almost to their staging areas. The carriers are also forming into their division on the run as they continue moving west.

Dec 11-12. Lots of things happening today.

Jap sub spotted Dutch minelayer NE of Bativa fired 8 and missed.

Chokai and 1 DD found a TF of 1 PG, 2 TK, and 2 AKs and sank them all near San Jose.

2 Jap CL and 3 DDs found a AKL in the same area and killed it.

I-156 spots a Dutch CMc between Singapore and Palembang, fires 8 and hits with 2 sinking it.

I-121 spots an AK near Jolo, and sinks her.

BB Fuso, BB Yamashiro, CA Kinugasa, CL Kitikami, CL Oi, and 6 DDs find and sink 5 AKLs near Iwo Jima.

Fighter sweep of 21 A6Ms over Manila engage 4 P-40Es on CAP. Follow-up sweep of 12 finds nothing. Port raided by 29 Nells and 15 Bettys escorted by 34 Zeros sinks 2 PTs.

Air raids on Alor Star with 29 Sallys score minor damage.

7 Seagulls attack Kongo Near Naga no hits.

Dutch attack Ryuho with 2 Hudsons which fail to get through the CAP. Ryuho is just north of the straight on the east side of Borneo. Afternoon strike by 3 Dutch Hudsons no hits.

3 Dutch Buffs and 2 Hudsons attack Jap AK of Sorong, no hits. Afternoon same attack, same result.

3 Brit Hudsons attack CL Kashii 9 hexes NE of Singapore. No hits. Follow up by 4 Blenheims, no hits. 3 more Blenheims attack, no hits. 3 Brit Hudsons attack an E sailing with Kashii, no hits. 2 Dutch attack in the afternoon, no hits.

36 P-40s attack the 16th division landing force at Mauban hitting 1 AK.

A dozen Kates sink a TK and an AK SW of Jolo.

Harassment raids on Wake. 2 F4Fs remain there, the rest probably flew off to Lexington.

Rabul raided as well. No CAP defense. Minor damage.

19 Nells raid Cayagan scoring moderate damage and damaging a number of B-17s.

9 Bettys attack AKs with a DE escort near Rangoon. 4 AVG intercept. No hits, no losses.

Small port attack raids on Hong Kong. No real damage.

Not going to continue to report the minor air strikes. Several in China and Malaya.

6 Bettys went in unescorted against Rangoon. It wasnt pretty.

12 Kates from Ryuho sink a TK at Tarakan.

Landings on Guam, Naga, Legaspi, Atimonan, Mauban, Kavieng (and the other base on New Ireland), Sorong (and the dot base next to it in western New Guinea), Narau Island, and Tarawa.

Shock attack at Hong Kong! Odds were 2-1 but had a level 1 fort. 2nd day attack hit at 1-2.
35th div deliberate attacked 8 new corps (China) south of Kaifeng at 128-1 odds.
3rd Bde deliberate attacked 98th corps east of Kaifeng at 3-1 driving them back.
4th JNAF co captured Taytay.
Elements of the 1st SNLF took Surigao on the north coast of Mindanao.
Tarawa fell to elements of the 51st nav gd.
Jap paras fell on Puerto Princia capturing it at 17-1 odds (and destroying the 3 Kingfishers based there).
Narau Island falls to the 2nd SNLF.

I-155 sinks a TK north of Java.
I-121 sinks the badly damaged AS Holland near Jolo.

Landings at Lolobato (1 hesx east of Terante), Buna, and Iba (on Luzon).

30 Nells and 16 Bettys attack the TF at Rangoon, 22 CAP intercept. 4 hits on 3 ships total for a dozen bombers. Later attack by 8 Bettys escorted by 20 Oscars scores 1 hit on an AK.

Follow-up port strike on Manila sinks 7 more PTs.

7 Seagulls attack the 16th div landing again hitting an AK.

Kashii continues to close on her target being attacked numerous times by Blenheims, Hudsons, Vildebeasts and Swordfish. She is eventually sunk by torpedoes. The escorting E class continues on and should reach their landing site next turn.

19 Sallys escorted by 20 Oscars raid Rangoon with minor damage and losses by both sides.

12 Kates from Ryuho kill a PC and an small AO south of Tarakan.

7 Seagulls sink 2 of those tiny AKLs off Iba (the 48th div landing force) in the afternoon.

*** Summary ***
23 allied aircraft lost to 44 Japs. Most of the Jap losses were unescorted raids on the TF at Rangoon.

Japs lost CL Kashii and 3 small AKs on the day. Allies lost a PG, PC, AS, AO, CMc, 3 TK, 10 AKs, and 9 PTs.

*** Observations ***
I-23s scout plane sighted a CV TF at Christmas island. Likely this is the Enterprise. Probably has Lex and Sara enroute to join it there.

A single ship sighted at Rabul. I would guess this to be CL Adelaide. Possibly an evacuation ship removing some of the troops, but I would send the Adelaide, so Im guessing thats what he did.

PTs were spotted at Hong Kong this turn. He must have had them at sea last turn and I failed to sight them.

New Ireland falls next turn, as does Buna. This will give me eyes in the Rabul/Moresby area.

The central Pacific is mine as far as Tarawa. Expansion beyond this will require carrier support. I would guess he will assemble his carriers at Christmas and then move south. Pago Pago maybe or possibly New Zealand. I will be cautious in this area for now.

The TFs he sent to Rangoon appear to be empty. It appears he is planning to evacuate Burma by sea rather than reinforcing it. Since they are leaving by sea rather than walking out (as I would do), I have to assume they are headed for Ceylon. I need to capture Tavoy and Moulmein to bring my air-power to bear.

Also, noted my A6Ms at Laoag on 100% LRCAP failed to protect any of my convoys, so will change them to provide dedicated CAP for a single TF.

Work and the game has kept me too busy to post. We have advanced to 16 Jan 42. Here is the current situation:




In Malaya I pushed out to Alor Star from Signora with the 1st and 5th armor and 2 regiments of the 5th div. I cut straight across to Georgetown from Patani with the 41st reg. This trapped 2 Indian Bdes in Alor Star where they were destroyed.

The 41st took Georgetown along with the 1st and 5th armor and they pushed to Taiping just south of it. My "normal" start is to keep pushing these 3 units down the road to the south, but he didnt pull the units out of the "tail" of Burma, so I shipped the 1st armor up north to deal with this, and the 5th armor joined the 5th division. The Imp Gd railed into Taiping and led the offensive south, through Kuala Lumpur and now into Malacca. I am running slightly behind my normal time line here because of not using the armor and he has fought for every hex.

Kota Bharu fell and both sides just sat and looked at each other. I didnt follow into the jungle and he didnt advance or retreat. I repaired the base, stacked a bunch of base forces and the 3rd air HQ and proceeded to fly sweeps and bombing missions over Singapore.

He finally starting pulling back from Kota Bharu when I landed a force at Kuantan. He hadnt pulled any of these troops back either, but I landed with the 4th ind mixed regiment, the 6th armor, the 15th nav gd and some engineers and pushed him back easily. The force he has at Temuloh (NE of Kuala Lumpur) is weak. 3 mauled bdes and some engineers. I have the 41st reg, the 4th reg, the 4th and 6th armor, and the 18th division either in the hex or will be on my next turn. Also troops are moving east and west 1 hex from Kuala Lumpur to cut the retreat thus destroying them.

My current strength in Malaya is:
Imp Guard div (spearheading on the west road south of Kuala Lumpur.)
The 2nd, 5th, 21st, and the 55th div (less the 146th reg) are in Kuala Lumpur advancing by rail behind the Imp Gd.
The 18th div, 41st reg, 4th reg and the 4th and 6th armor reducing the pocket north of Kuala Lumpur.
Plus engineers, base forces, art, and 2 nav gd units.

Air strength is about 60 Zeros. 35 Oscars and about 70 Nates. 36 Bettys, 60 Sallys, 50 Lilys, and some recon aircraft.

I dont think I will take Singapore by the end of Jan as I would have liked, but it wont be too long after.

Luzon:





Pretty much basic attack on the PI, other than I took the side of caution and my initial landings with the 48th div were way up north. The 16th landed on the east and the 21st bde from Hanoi landed at Iba. As has been reported already, he ran numerous fighter naval attacks against me with little result.

The current situation is the 48th and some arty is at Clark bombarding. He tried shock attacking them a few turns back at 1-5. This will cost him in the long run. That attack combined with using up air sorties probably cost him a month of hold out time. I am now looking at taking Luzon by the middle or maybe early May because of it. The 16th and 21st bde are in Manila. as he has his strength divided, I brought in the 14th div from Korea and tried a shock attack at Manila, but only got 1-2 odds, so I am going to evacuate the 14th and send them to New Guinea.

Lower PI was pretty much my "standard" attack:





Pretty much everything lands at once and just squeezes. The 1/33rd landed after the 2 bases to the east of it were taken cutting retreat routes. The 65th and 8th armor are currently embarking for their next landing.

Eastern DEI:




There was some initial spirited fighting in this area. I landed at the base NW of Ambon with a base force with a fast transport group and moved in Zeros and Seaplanes. The 56th div landed at Ambon and took the base. He send a few cruiser/DD raids against it (I was defending with 1 of my standard 2 CL+4 DD cover forces). It was after a couple of APs were sunk (they were starting to load the 56th and about 20% of the division died at sea) that I decided to bring in the hammer. Hiryu/Soryu were sent in along with the Yamashiro BB group.

3 CL groups raided Koepang were they caught several large AKs and APs, and subs picked off some of the survivors. He currently has 11 units and aprox 34,000 troops at Koepang. I suspect the 45th and 46th bdes and probably the 18th Brit div. I will isolate and bomb it daily until I get ready to take it out, which will be after Java.

I flew in a recon unit to Dili on Timor and took pictures of Darwin. It showed 34 ships in port and 30 bombers with no fighters. So I flew in a Nell squadron to Ambon and bombed the port. Sank 5 or more subs, 2 ARs, an AS and several other ships. The Hiryu group picked off many of the survivors as they tried to flee (mostly short range coastal minesweepers).

The 56th has loaded and are currently at sea south of Timor. The 38th div (and the rest of the unrestricted units from Hong Kong) are enroute to join them for the invasion of Oz. They are just off the map to the north.

Rabul area:



Pretty self explanatory. Fischhafen is a level 2 airfield now and has a Betty group assigned. Buna is a level 1 and growing. Again, some spirited fights between cruiser groups in this area until I brought up the Fuso group. He just landed troops at Moresby where reports have him at about 20,000 strength in 7 units. Im not too worried. I have the Akagi/Kaga, and 2 battle divions (4 BBs) in the area. I also have 3 divisions enroute with a 4th in reserve. After my airfields are a little bigger I will bring up the Hiryu group and the Shokaku group and take it out.

3 Feb 42, Singapore falls. It fell from the shock attack from moving into the hex. Japanese troops walk into a vacant Rangoon today as well. It falls next turn. Of the troops I have in Malaya, the 2nd and 5th divs are heading to the PI to clean that up, while the remainder (18th, 21st, Imp Gd, 55th, and 56th from Australia) will head off to Java. Waiting on sweepers from Cam Rahn Bay to clear the mines at Singapore.

American carriers appeared off Wake a few turns ago with no targets there, they left. The same turn the Akagi/Kaga group dispatched the Queen Mary as she was unloading on Guadalcanal. Probably why the US carriers left. Im sure he thought all my carriers were tied down with the Darwin operation.

Darwin fell to the 56th and 38th divisions. The 38th has pushed 1 hex south of Katherine on its way to Daily Waters. The 56th is chasing survivors of the Darwin attack to the east of the road.

The 4th div landed at Lae (to push back the companies that are deployed in the area at start) and is proceeding to Moresby by land. The 14th div from Luzon is unloading at Buna and is also heading to Moresby by land. 2 divisions are in reserve.

Advanced to 9 Mar 42. Manila fell killing 3 or 4 Phil divisions. The 2nd, 5th, and 16th divs attacked while the 48th held the line at Clark. 16th was badly disrupted in the fighting to date, so I left them behind as the Manila garrison and advanced to Clark with the 2nd and 5th.

20 or so Chinese corps surrounded and killed in China.

Landings all around Borneo with naval guards.

Burma has 22 enemy units holed up in Mandalay. 5th and 6th Gd divs going up to greet them.

Landed at Derby in northern Oz and he sent the Indom and Hermes to intercept. A CL cover group engaged in surface action (nothing to report) and lost a CL to carrier aircraft the next day.

18th, 21st, and Imp Gd landed on the eastern tip of Java.

First carrier to carrier battle:
Got reports from my picket subs last turn about aircraft flying over them, so sent in 3 carrier groups from the Marshalls.

2nd day attacks met no fighters or carriers. Yorktown reported sunk. Recon reports show 2 damaged carriers in 2 separate TFs (the yellow circles on the map above). He lost 233 aircraft with 130 of them as carrier air ops losses (meaning they didnt have any place to land), and 19 more as carrier aircraft ground losses (meaning they sank on the carrier), so I would guess that 1 carrier was sunk, and 2 more are out of action.

Luzon has the allied forces bottled in Bataan and will fall in a couple of weeks tops.
