Who Is Still Playing SPWAW?

After nearly ten years, this is still my all-time favorite game. I never tire of it, as it offers so many possibilities in battles and campaigns. As a long-time vet in OOB design, I still can't resist making a few tweaks here and there as I discover info through various sources.

The thing about SPWaW that fascinates me is not in the tank vs tank battles, but campaigns that involve primarily infantry forces. Of course, I focus on the Pacific theater, in which armor played an important but secondary role. For the USMC, the Shermans and the flame tanks were vital in destroying Japanese fortifications in the "corkscrew and blowtorch" techniques in the 1944-45 battles. This type of war was a bloody slugfest, but the Marines fought two different wars from 1942-45. In 1942-43, it was primarily in the jungles of the southern islands, in which the Japanese still relied on the offensive. In 1944-45, the fighting switched to amphibious assaults on barren rocky islands and attrition war. The 1942-45 USMC campaign is a tough one to get through, and using "low-carnage" settings makes it even tougher. I end up definitely appreciating the Marines' reorganizations through each year to upgrade their firepower, and one fully realizes why the Marines did this.

In the past 5 years, the Enhanced SPWaW crew built upon the earlier work I did on the USMC OOB, and I must say that it is now one of the the most historically accurate OOBs in any tactical game. This is primarily due to the magnificent work of author Gordon Rottman in his detailed reference books which served as our sources. I bought nearly every book Mr. Rottman wrote on the USMC in WWII, and these volumes are valued parts of my military history collection.

Is there another game ? Not for me, I have a recent release (Panzer Corps) which I enjoy, but I still prefer SPwaw in all its Mods.

Exactly! One of the best games, equal to the brilliance of Sid Meiers Civilization I ... but the graphics just don't cut it for me anymore.
Every once in a while old SP players popup, but the sad thing is that there's no hint whatsoever of an update for this game... [:(]

Still play pretty often. There is no better game in the genre.

If you haven't tried the updated graphic files in the enhanced mod then give it a shot. They are a bit better than the originals. You don't have to use the new OOBs if you don't want to, so you will still be compatible with all the old scenarios. The graphics, sounds, text files, can all be installed separately.

The graphics are completely adequate for a game of this type. Besides, wargamers aren't supposed to be concerned with fancy graphics!

Hi Falcon: I can compare SPwaw graphics against Panzer Corps Wermacht and I'll vote for the old girl (SPwaw) again. I looked high and low for a good looking game and in my opinion (FWIW) Silent Hunter Cdrs, edition gets my vote. As for updated versions you don't have to go far from SPwaw for that. Scenarios aplenty are also available for every version. Yeah ! I quess I'm a SPwaw fan, yeah and I can play from either side also.

I bought Steel Panthers 1 back in '95 and I'm still playing it's descendant SPWAW and probably will continue to do so as long as my 32-bit XP box holds out. I haven't found anything that handles tactical squad level action quite as well as SPWAW. This is one of the few games where real world tactics actually work in the game.

Still, I really do wish that there was the possibility that this old classic would get updated.

But WaW have longer maps:

WaW map size: 240x100 (12KM x 5KM, 60sqKM)
WW2 map size 200x160 (10KM x 8KM, 80sqKM)

But WaW has a 100 formation limit which may keep players from fully using a 12KM front.
WW2 goes up to 200 formations.

Cross I may be corrected but I believe you now can have 200 units per side in SPwaw now.

Hey Planner,

This is my understanding of the game limits:

SPWaW Formations: 100
SPWaW Units: 400

SPWW2 Formations: 200
SPWW2 Units: 500

I got those figures from the SPWW2 Game Guide 4.0, and the SPWaW Players Manual version 5.0

I'm quite sure the SPWW2 numbers are up-to-date, less sure about the SPWaW numbers.

cheers,
Cross

Cross You are probably correct, yet this old memory bank of mine says there was an update somewhere around the update of the game to 8.x, I'm searching but the dearch function stinks here. If I should run aCROSS it I'll drop a note here .

Shouldn't be too hard to test this out. Just start a battle with 10000 points and see how many formations the game lets you buy. I'll do it when I get home from work.
