I'm a new player and after working through the tutorial I'm giving the Hofen scenario a try.

I'm assigning orders to the German Rgts. There are a number of Arty support units that are under Divisional Cmd.

If I go ahead without specifying any orders for the Div Arty units I assume that they'll just sit there?

I'd like to assign the Div Arty units to support my Rgt attacks. Does this make any sense? How would I go about doing this?

Short answer is that any arty unit that you do not give a direct order to and that is defending will automatically provide on call support to any unit under the command of its superior. If the superior's task does not have the Direct Spt Only flag checked then it may support other units requesting from outside of your supior's force.

Alternately, you can order the arty unit yourself. Just order it to defend at some safe location. Therafter, order it to bombard whatever target you designate within its range and it will fire for whatever time you specify. At the conclusion it will either go on "on-call" or "defend" depending on whther you have the "Rest after Bombard" option checked in the Options tab on the side bar.

Good. BTW any long range arty that you give a direct order to will appear in the Fire Spt tab on the sidebar. So you an easily locate them from there and give orders to them.

I've got a newbie question too..I hope it's ok with the OP to just ask here...If I've given orders to a battalion HQ, will giving its superior brigade or regiment HQ different orders then supersede those I gave directly to the battalion?

No they won't. What happens is that when you gave the original order to your Bn it is detached from its Regiment HQ and placed directly under your control. So when you then give an order to the Regt HQ it will not be part of its forceGroup.
