What type of plane do these wings belong to?

Geeze.... It would be a bit easier if you could actually see em...... [:(]
However, given the size, the large taper from the base to the tip and the assumed link to the Pacific, I am going to take a punt on a pair of TBF/TBM wings.

Another angle.
I have a bunch of these. I thought I would start with one with a little bit of a challenge since people here are so good at identifying stuff. Maybe it was too hard?

I think you are right, Reg. The shape of the wing where it joins the fuselage with the right angle cut out would seem to indicate a wing that didn't just fold but also swept backwards. That would certainly apply to an Avenger.

Both of you are warm. The big open box is covered with a panel held on with zeus fasteners (fancy screws).

Got it!!
Outer (folding) wing panels of a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. It must be a one big airplane!! [X(]
Allowing for the removal of the wing tips, dive flaps and ailerons the wing panels line up nicely with the panels seen at http://aircraftdrawingsdownload.com/files/sb2c.pdf
There is only one other SB2C flying in the world but this one looks like it is still a long way off joining it.
I was initially thrown by the lack of curves but without the wingtips and ailerons you can't tell. I was always a bit suspicious of the layout of the fold line which didn't quite fit the TBM but it lines up nicely for a SB2C.
By the way Don, they are actually DZUS fasteners and it would be a brave aircraft designer who would use them on a load bearing panel of that size. They are designed for quick release and are not particularly strong. Most likely that panel will be secured by screws.

I thought about that too but the panels are all wrong. The hellcat has constant width skin panel planks near the wingtip. These taper toward the wingtip.

That's definitely a Helldiver!! Nice to see there is one under restoration and it looks like a good job too.
Were there any other treasures tucked away in the corners of that hanger?
Please post some more pics as they are very interesting.

Pulling out a couple of my plastic kits and looking at the wings...
The join of the folding part and the fixed part of the wing on the SB2C is straight and the outer panel is not as long as the F6F. The Hellcat does have some taper to the wing if you take away the aileron. Looking at a Hellcat kit with separate outer wings, the shape of the top, outer left wing looks about right from the pictures. The big hole in the wing is also the right place for the ammo bay on the F6F.
The outer wing panel on the Hellcat is 16 1/2 feet long. The outer wing on the SB2C is 14 feet. This is calculated from measuring the 1/48 scale model parts I have here.
That museum is restoring both an F6F-3 and an SB2C-3. They specialize in rarer aircraft.

I don't have any pictures of it. It was tucked away somewhere when I was there (which was 2 years ago).

If anybody finds themselves in the Los Angeles area. I strongly recommend going out to Chino which is on the eastern fringe of the metro area. There are two huge air museums there. I grew up about 45 minutes from there and going to the air museum beat Disneyland hands down. The second museum started when I was in high school.
