How to Start?

I have just bought WITE, and of course overwhelmed. Can someone show me a way of starting this game? Should i sit and read the entire manual, or should i just open a scenario and play it again and again? Which parts of the manual are essential for a beginner? I don't have much time because of my school so i need to learn this game quickly. A scenario suggestion also would be good.
And please tell me what numbers that on the unit counter mean. In TOAW, left number means attack strenght and the other is defense but i don't think it is the same for WITE.

There is a tutorial manual in the manual folder that was written by a tester around the time the game was released. You can read it and IIRC it uses the Velikie Luki Tutorial scenario which you can play as you read. Although it may be a little out of date (i.e. missing a few features added after release), it will get you through a lot of the basics.

Velikie scenario is good for not to overwhelmed at first time you play the game but if you are planning to play Axis I think Leningrad scenario is good to start with. Units start compact not spread out and Axis hierarchy is more easy to understand. Soviet hierarchy still alien to me.[:D]
At first just keep an eye that corps HQ have max 8 units attached and Army hq 24. Don't bother to arrange support units yet. Make sure your units in command range of HQ. CTRL+Z to see if they are in range.
After you play all three small scenarios including North,Central and South army groups you can start GP.

Operation Boot Camp
It's a few version out of date but it got me started. Basically a turn by turn walk through and what to look at, how things work, and basic ins and outs of the game mechanics.
After that, playing one of the sceanrios is MUCH easier as you have a better idea of what to do or what to look for in the manual. And make sure you download the updated manual. I don't have the reference for it right now but you will get confused if you don't.
It can be a little tough to get started just due to the complexity but don't get discouraged. After you go through a three or four turns, the basic mechnics are actually fairly staightforward.
Its a great game and have fun!!!

Offense/Movement Points, unless you press "Z", then it is attack/defence.
(for your own units that is)

Thank you gentlemen, especially for Operation Boot Camp. It seems very useful.

Purchased this game a ways back - but never got beyond the tutorial that came with it - which didn't really get me into the game. Just found Operational Boot Camp and now waiting to grab moments to play. A good tutorial really helps - wish there was one for War in the Pacific...
Thanks dlazov66!

I wrote a short tutorial for the Velikie Luki scenario that you might find useful as well:

You will, start, and then restart a big game several times, give or take, depending on how well you catch on. Winter will shock you if playing Axis, and there is nothing to prepare you for it. Just play it through, and learn. It is worth the effort.

After boot camp, 'the road to scenario's' may be a good way to start. 'The road to Minsk' scenario is a nice short scenario to give you a basic feeling for the game. It's only 3 turns.
