Hi,
does the AI perform counter battery fire automatically if the arty units are "On call"?
What's the best tactic to neutralize his artillery fire?
Thanks in advance,
bye

No, it will just blast away at what it can see, just as the human player is to do. But would be a nice to have for future versions of CO to have counter battery procedures impemented, at least in some basic ways.
Best you can do vs the AI is to occupy high ground or generally places, that allow watching deep into the enemy rear. Good sighting weather and daytime off course is prerequisite as well.
If there´s some unreliable contact markers popping up deep in the enemy rear, which do not move, there´s a high chance it could be enemy artillery.
Now if you´ve long range artillery assets and lots of ammo to your avail, you could try blasting the enemy contact markers and see if artillery on friendly units lessens. The best to expect would be lots of suppression on enemy artillery and its temporary unavailabilty, unless you could put a massive fire concentration on it. Slow ROF harassing fires won´t likely do much.
That´s basically the situation to work from and a big challenge to keep an overview on all that.

Just saw this query. You sure there's no counter-battery fire, RH? I thought I read somewhere that Dave had said there was.

Yes there is counter battery fire but it is handled automatically. It could probably do with an overhaul and an interface to allow the player to designate certain arty for that role. So much to do, so little time.

I just saw CB fire, when enemy batteries got in LOS of friendlies, but I wouldn´t take it as CB fire as such, rather fire of opportunity on a spotted high value target. True CB would involve spotting by sound & flash, aireal observation and such. Is something like that implemented?[&:]
Edit: I.e the germans had for this purpose an additional observation detachement ("Beobachtungs Abteilung") in Arty Rgts, as well as independent units at corps and army levels. Other nations had similar units for sure.
