CS Graphics Glitches

This is a new "official" support thread for reporting graphics glitches in the Campaign Series.

Below are some examples of the graphics glitches we want reported.

These first examples are from Modern Wars Vietnam, still very much a work in progress. (So don't conclude anything about the current state of Modern Wars from this, much less about the eventual final product. I regret that I don't have any Campaign Series examples to start this thread off.)

In the first image following, do you see the gear-like "sprockets" fanning out from the water hexes? (I don't recall exactly, but I believe they first appeared after an earlier air attack.)

Do you see the occasional gaps in the road? To the southeast of the "Route 602" label, also to the northwest of the "Thanh Hoi" label.

Image

Next image below, more or less the same scene, but the reverse, after pressing the R key.

If you look closely, you can see the gap in the road near the bottom of the screenshot.

See the beige flecks in the shallow water hexes? They are not there in the reverse map display.

If you look real closely, you will also see beige-colored "tracers" shooting out to the "northeast" of the coastal objective hex. Where did they come from? I don't recall any firing to or from that hex in that direction.

What don't you see? Where are the "sprockets" in the reverse (R key) image? Mysteriously, they are gone. But just as mysteriously, they reappear when I reverse the map image. And in that reverse map image, the "sprockets" persist, turn after turn.

Image

One more example.

Do you see the dark blue bars in the shallow water hexes near the coast? I can't reproduce it, but earlier in my game I saw thin beige-colored borders on the "south" side of all deep water hexes. They showed at mid zoom, IIRC, but not at the other zoom levels.

Image

These graphics glitches come and go. We've probably all seen them over the years, maybe just shrugged our shoulders over them. But now maybe we can do something about them. (See my Berto's Squad Battles 2D Graphics Mod.)

No: no maybe. We can't promise perfection. But we will try to clean up as many of these glitches as we can.

So, as you play the Campaign Series, if you see something odd graphically, please post it here in this thread. A picture is worth a thousand words, so images are by far the best.

The more glitches reported, the more brought to our attention, the more of them will be fixed.

In your second picture: "See the beige flecks in the shallow water hexes? They are not there in the reverse map display."

They are also light blue flecks in the deep water.

Are they shadow anomalies from the hex grid that you do not have turned on? Are they there when the hex grid is on?

Could that also be part of the "Do you see the dark blue bars in the shallow water hexes near the coast?" in the third pic?

I had seen those also. (Other, nitpicky ones besides.) But I didn't mention them so as not to pile on.

It's too soon to speculate about possible bugs in the graphics engine. First we focus on the graphics BMP files. Those are the easiest to clean up.

Also too soon (for me, not for other team members) to work directly on this. My higher near-term priorities involve the deep coding.

But not too soon to invite and gather in problem reports. Everybody, please feel free...

Those "sprockets" as you say it look a bit similar to the ones in the unit description, where the six... rectangular (or what are they called?) boxes describe an unit strengths. Or maybe it's my imagination.

Thank you berto, will report them when and if they happen!

<bump>

Here is a screenshot from East Front, from a winter night scenario:

Image

A very annoying graphical glitch -- the dotted lines along the hexsides -- should be obvious.

edit>Note: This is a graphical artifact after turning off the hex outline feature. Everything looks fine with hex outlines activated.

I would be surprised if this is the only graphical glitch in any of EF, WF & RS.

And disappointed, if you continue to see them but don't report them. Now is your chance!

(Also, another sneak preview of the new, provisional, work-in-progress toolbar in action. See the three new Units menu items? See their three new toolbar counterparts? [:)])

Another one, from West Front:

Image

If you look closely, you will see very slight, orange lines on the top/bottom edges of (only) some darkened sand hexes.

This appears in '2' Zoomin50 3D mode only (doesn't appear in standard '1' max zoom-in 3D mode), and as portrayed with a CP unit selected and the 'W' ON_DISPLAYCOMMAND highlight applied, which darkens hexes outside of command range.

Again, reporting graphics glitches in order that we might fix them: Now is your chance!

How much of this is from 8 bit graphics on 32 bit displays? Windows may be trying to compress or uncompress the files and compromise them.

Berto,

I get the lines in 2d zoom in mode as well.

It appears to be the darkening pixels, but there are several sets in each terrain set, would take me a little while to locate the offender(s), and widen them just a bit. Wondering if through an update years ago, through copy/pasting one or more didn't get messed up?

There is an easy fix for this that hopefully (please) makes it into the next patch. The bmp/bit mismatch is in the West Front/Special folder so just copy (not move) the following 3 MG platoon graphic bitmaps from the East Front/Special folder into the West Front/Special folder and overwrite OK:
S-UP01213.bmp (for snow cammo)
L-UP01213.bmp (for late war cammo)
E-UP01213.bmp (for early war cammo)

Looks like this made it into 2.0, however the early one was in their wrong, listed as E-UP1213, instead of E-Up-01213, same with one for 01238, just fixed that as well.

yeah, thanks Mike.

but here's another one for you...a real puzzler.

Unit is the British OQF M1A1 75mm pack howitzer from WF. ID #P09112

As you can see from the pic, the .bit file is wrong. However, if you view the howitzer in the Unit Viewer, it appears to have a completely different graphic....one that will line up with the .bit file correctly!
