I've seen quite a bit about Steam for awhile, but what is Steam? It seems as though some hate it, and some love it??

It's a digital platform for buying games.

Pros: Download anything you have purchased to any PC, anywhere. Games go on sale constantly, often at incredibly low prices (this is determined by the developer/publisher of said game, not Steam). Automatic updating, in-game browser+chat+screenshots+yadda, overall a very solid service.

Cons: Your games are tied to your account forever and most require Steam to be running for them to launch (but not always online).

Many people seem to have an irrational hatred of Steam, I've never had a single problem with it. I like the Matrix setup as well though, nice automatic patches and just a serial code as DRM, really nice.

It is a place where overweight, hairy guys sit around and try not to make eye contact.

Hi wodin. The game looks cool. Would be nice if you could take the German side too.

The voices are IRRITATING!
The graphics are poor.

Not for me.

You seem to have forgotten to mention that the game saves are messed about, worse one for me was X3, due to the way Steam runs and whether or not the game was released before it was on Steam the games code needs to be changed, in the X3 case folks had lost a lot of time they had put into the game.

Try doing a Google search with - "Steam + broken game saves" that shows a few of the problems.

Still the benefits of steam far outweigh negatives. Really see no problem with it. Many games that are release don Steam are hardly games your going to still be playing years later.

My only issue is I should have opened a separate account for my daughter..cos when she is playing I can't.. thats annoying.

Also I went on holiday a while ago and didn't have an Internet connection and was unable to play any of my games for two weeks. Apparently you have to go into offline mode while you are online to enable offline play. I don't know whether this has changed but I wasn't a happy bunny. Another problem I find is that Steam is so convenient that it is easy to impulse buy. Must control myself better.

It looks like Unity of Commnad, Panzer General and Actung Spitfire conceived a red headed step child.

I like the strategic parts that were shown but the tactical ring around the rosy parts were not for me.

Punk yes it's silly..having to go online to choose offline defeats the purpose.

If you start Steam without any internet connection, after it times out connecting, you should get a dialog box that
says "Retry Connection" or "Start in Offline Mode"
