Loading and unloading infantry/guns

I am new to WAW and can't figure out how to load and unload troops/pak guns etc. In the old Steel Panthers you could pick something up from the hex next to the vehicle. This does not work in WAW - it appears you have to be in the same hex to do it. I get the message "Unit is too far away" every time. The only way I can figure out how to be in the same hex as another unit is if the hex is at the end of your range and you try to move to the hex beyond.

HELP! This is incredibly frustrating. Not being able to move infantry and limber/unlimber guns is a major problem in playing this game. Plus my men have compained that they are tired of walking (ha ha).

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

its pretty easy:

to load a unit ==>

1) move truck/ht/etc into same hex as unit to be loaded OR vice versa (use SHIFT - LEFT CLICK to do this)

2) hit the L key and select the unit to be loaded with a LEFT CLICK

3) to load MORE THAN ONE UNIT, make the unit(s) to be loaded active and then (L) then click the unit to be loaded into, repeat until unit to be loaded into is full

4) to see the capacity of a unit to hold other units, right click, see "CARRY CAPACITY" line at bottom left. to see the cost in carry capacity of a unit, look at the WEIGHT or CARRY COST line right next to the carry capacity line.

capacity = 6 = 6 men, no AT GUNS, etc
capacity = 106 = 6 men or arty/AT GUN/etc not larger than 106 weight
capacity = 218 = 18 men or arty/at gun/etc not larger then 218 weight

the largest carrying capacity is 254, the largest weight is 255
some units, like US 4.5" rockets cannot be carried by any non-modified unit (this is stoopid)

Anyway, that's all you need to know, hopefully. Good lux and ho-pe this helps.

I've used the loading multiple units trick too but have you ever gotten the message that says there isn't enough room, load units anyway? I swear that I've done this and the excess unit dissappears off of the board and into oblivion, or maybe it was the Twilight Zone. Any body else have this happen to them?:(

You bet. If you choose to load anyway the remaining troops do just disappear. I try to locate a bigger truck;)

Glad to know it's just an error in judgement and not something Bill Gates snuck in on me.

This is better than how it used to work back when SPWAW v1.0 came out. Back then if you loaded a tank aboard a heavy truck you ended up with a tank that now had a crew size equal to the capacity of the truck.

For example you could load a 5 man tank weight 254 onto a truck with a capacity of 218 and then when you unloaded it you got a tank with an 18 man crew.

Fortunately that bug was squashed so you can no longer load tanks on trucks (even though there were tank transporters for carrying tanks long distance).

SPWW2 gets around this by inflating the carry capacity of units so that full squads can be carried by almost any vehicle.

Sometimes it is better to take the loss of a few men to evacuate a unit out of trouble, with a vehicle that isn't big enough to carry it all, instead of letting that unit get destroyed. The complete loss of a unit in the WWII campaign is worse than just losing a couple of men, since for most nations it means getting a unit with lower experiance and morale as a replacement, whereas you can fix the remnant of a unit for minimal loss in experiance.
thanks, John.

Oh, the humanity! "Guys, wait up, I can't fit in the truck! GUYS!!!"

You might think he'd just climb on the hood, or hang on to the bumper or somthing... In case of emergency I think you can fit a LOT more units onto a truck than the regs state.

Not any more. My opponents seem to do quite well at killing my units. No sign that they need help from me.
