Newbie question on Opportunity Fire

How does opportunity fire work in WAW? I see the red line but my units never fire. Do I need to hit a hotkey or something?

Thanks,

Dan

You have to confirm the op fire buy hitting the left mouse button, if you don't want to fire hit the right mouse button or "esc" key. Believe it or not there are time when you don't want to op fire. IE:You're about to fire a rifle against a tank or the units are so far away damage would be almost immpossible. Especially important for units in hiding setting an ambush, firing gives your positions away etc, you will learn over time when to and when not to use it.

hit the space bar to fire, nothing to pass on the opfire.

the delay before op-fire moves on to the next units op-fire can be set in preferences.

note that the game cheats, you only get 2 op-fires, and the AI invariably selects the wimpiest and most distant units to fire with it can. Sometimes I actually make sure only the units I want to fire can see an area so I get some decent op-fires, ie, set an ambush. Its also useful to set the weapons range of certain units so they are not included in the AI's op-fire selection. For instance, I often set flamethrower leg units weapon ranges to 1 even tho carbines, etc can fire much further. These settings can be set a number of ways, for instance, right click the unit and set the hex distances there.

hope this helps

Or, if you are like me, you turn off opfire confirm and let the ai handle it. No batt commander decides what every vehicle or squad fires at, sometimes you have to let the unit make a mistake or two to better simulate warfare.
thanks, John.
