The AAR follows Sardinia-Piedmont as it expands to control all Italy apart from the Po valley, builds a colonial empire in East Africa, fight two wars with the Ottomans and finally, in 1880, wrests Milan from the Austrians. Its up to mid-1881 at the moment.

Tho' wargaming for 40 years, I'm new to this game and it forebears. I should probably have not jumped straight into Russia after skimming through the manual and the very basic tutorials [:D]

I think I will follow your lead with somewhere simpler.
