Which units does the "Arty Direct Spt Only" check box affect? Does it mean that attached artillery units (that were ordered to do the attack), will only fire in support to this assault? And can they still request fire support from other artillry units.

I'm a little confused, as to which units are affected with this check box.

It affects only to those units belonging to the force for which you're defining the task. A force includes any units you've selected directly and their subordinates.

So, if you select a Bn HQ unit (with the usual 3 Coys and a heavy weapons coy or platoon) along with (via Ctrl+Left Click) a field artillery Bn, the heavy weapons coy/platoon and the arty Bn will only fire in support of the infantry coys in the force, ignoring requests from other on-map forces.
