Allied Airborne not dropping

For the past 4 turns (days) I have tried to drop the 503rd from Port Morseby to Woodlark Island but no joy. I know the Japanese para works but it seems the Allied doesn't. I have incorp the latest patch 4/27/13.

Have you air dropped them before? I think there's a rather long wait before you can use them again. Six months maybe.

Those paratroops work just fine if dropped elsewhere (try Terapo in your game - they drop without issue), they just won't drop onto an enemy held base where you already have troops present. I don't know whether this is intentional or a bug. Hopefully someone else (Michael) can comment on this particular kind of drop.

Where in the world did you get that from Geoff?

No. These drops were my first attempt to drop allied airborne. Now I tried to drop from Cooktown to Goodeough, range 12, but the game wouldn't let me. An I am using para units.

w/o getting your savegame loaded up as I'm not on laptop, is the base in normal range of the transport (I assume yes)? Is the unit your trying to airdrop have the transportable devices (ie the paratroops/support as some of the flak & art are too large to air transport)? Is woodlark a base hex or a dot base (if a dot I don't think you can't paradrop on that). I think I've paradropped in the past on a base I've already got troops at using some of the betas but it's been awhile since that was the case for me.

As to Geoff, there's not a rule for what you say - you can airdrop as many times as you wish w/o time delays other than any devices that are above air load limits like flak & some art.

I tried both ways, without and with allied units there. As a matter of fact I sent in an Ampih TF when they would not drop.

There is always weather. It could be bad during all those days over either bases.

Oh yes you can. Standard procedure for Japan in early war. You do not want to send one small transport, to catch gazillions of those dots.

Woodlark is a base with port and airfield built up, has a flag. I was able to drop the Japanese para onto Palembang to seize the oil fields earlier in the game. So the Japanese side works. it's like fragmented units, I only have that trouble with the Allies.

It must have come out when I pulled my thumb out of my ...

Maybe I was thinking of a different game? In Europe probably.

The destination AF is too damaged.

Looks like the order of checks is backwards. The parachute-type check is done after that check. Bug applies regardless of side.
Funny it hasn't cropped up before unless some other defect was hiding it.

Will fix for weekend

edit
my fault. In the beta, I split the one big complicated check into 2 parts to make it run better (and make it make more sense) but put them in wrong order

Japanese airborne can redrop the very next day. This is not likely the cause.

Working with a different unit in the data, I found it had devices too big to be carried by aircraft. The British Para Division, if combined, will NEVER drop - as one brigade (called a "support battalion" but it contains entire battalions, one of them of 24 pounders) won't even airlift point to point. Another - the airmobile brigade - will airlift but not airdrop. But all three (2 para and 1 airmobile) brigades have device issues. Tell me the number of the unit - the slot number - and I will look at it to see.

I also doubt this explanation is true. It certainly is NOT true for Japanese airborne.

This IS true. That is, airborne cannot be done to extended range, only normal range. This is in the manual, so I assumed that you knew that. But it is worth checking. Also note that the normal range of a transport is not always easy to understand - it depends on the mod and the type of aircraft if the data on the screen for players is correct or not? For example, extended range for a transport is the transfer range divided by 2 - period. That means, the air transport data needs to be entered such that transfer range and extended range are the same number (although extended range will show half the number of hexes). This is the airmobile range for airborne units. Normal range is some value less than that. It requires experimentation at the time the data is entered - so the unit displays to the player usable values. And even then, for a flying boat defined as such, the air transport ranges are NOT what is shown, but rather the code defined % (e.g. half of transfer = extended, sometimes losing a hex due to round off). [If a flying boat is ONLY an air transport, it can be defined as a transport that is "float capable" - which oddly means it MUST use its floats, not that they optional, as one might expect from the real life usage of that term]
