Hey guys,

What would your pirate empire be called in Shadows? I'm struggling to think of a non-cheesy one that other pirates won't laugh at. Would love to hear your ideas!

Certainly not original, but I almost have to go with The Jolly Rogers. [;)]

Wouldn't necessarily have to use classic pirate terms...

One could be the ___________ Foundation, the __________ Order, the ___________ Society for example. Those would be alternatives to the use of classic pirate names like Clan, Gang, etc.

You could use historic pirate figures like, Morgan, Lafitte, Blackbeard. Bonnet, Kidd, or Roberts as a basis for your clan. Or you can go to literature for names like Long John Silver. You could also use famous pirate locations like Tortuga. It will be a lot of fun to put this kind of spin into the game.

Depends largely on the race I'd say. I tend to play insectoid (friendly ones) in all of my X4 games when possible so I tend to pick names that fit with Hivemind or community themes.

My most common one would be the Hiver Consortium though - Might go with a roleplayed exile prince trying to fight his way back to power through his few loyal drones. I'm such a nice pacifist - even when I'm a pirate. [:D]

Edit: Came up with another one as a spur of the moment thing. Roidjockeys! [:'(]

Hmmm... I have to go to my Running Wild collection (Pirate Metal band) for some ideas. [;)]

Pirates do not control.

Thankfully they don't force you to enslave anyone - plenty of room for some friendly smuggling and mercenary (system defense) work.

I've always liked the corny pirate names. Always the something gang.

I'm thinking something like the YARRRRson Empire.

I'd probably go with something like 'Maquis de Saad', just to scramble a few codes.  My home system would be Saad...

Leave the name box blank. The game does decent job of picking pirate names. My current pirates are called Black Star Security. Not too bad. [:)]

Going by the styling of theives guild leader being 'The Beggar King' or the 'The Walking Man';

Beggar Kings
Walkers / Walking Men
Shadow Lords
Brotherhood / Association of Free Brothers

as well all the earth historical Blackbeard/Bluebeard/Corsairs/Privateers/Free Navy, and so on

The Blazing suns.
The forgotten.
Raiders of the night.
The Pirates of Salvation.
The Children of 2guncohen.

I think I will name my pirate faction after mercenary companies in A song of Ice and Fire. The golden company or the second sons would be my choice but I think I could go with Thousand Suns

A formulaic but effective way of forming names is to combine an appropriate noun with a descriptor. Some allow for easy backstories as well. For instance:

For Dhayut (arachnid) pirates - The Black Web.

For any species - The Seven Daggers. Backstory: While the size of the organization has grown significantly since its founding, the name refers both to the original members of this group as well as its first rite of passage. To bind themselves in interest and loyalty, the founders are said to have gathered in secret at a round table. Each then passed the name of a sworn enemy to the man on his left. Within a fortnight, seven murders had been committed, and the men were forever linked by their acts of blood.
