Why do space ports need cargo bays?

I noticed the spaceports have cargo bays yet they can also access unlimited planetary cargo. Are the cargo bays there for reality sake or do they actually serve an in- game purpose?

I think you can also build spaceports in space, the default design will need cargo bays in that case

Good point, I don't see too many but I can see how the AI would not be able to distinguish between planetary vs space designs.

And realistically, you shouldn't be able to use gas giants as storage planets. But here you can.

What are the requirements for building a spaceport anywhere except at a colony? Is it something you research?

No requirements, but you'll have to obey space limits for those ones.

I don't see the option n the constructors or gas giant to create a spaceport... What am I missing?
