First thing to see if trench width means anything in the game is to open the Estab and Map engines to see if those contain any criteria for specifying trench width.
Since you can do that on your own, here are a few situations where trench width could be evaluated in terrain effects calculations for combat or mobility depending on the granularity being used to evaluate combat unit movement:
Mobility -- one design specification for motorized vehicles is defined as the ability to cross a trench up to a specific width without stopping.
Protection -- bombardment effects are diminished for troops emplaced in certain combination of trench width and depth parameters in the bombarded zone.
Combat Engineering -- mobile combat engineer bridges (e.g. "scissor bridges") are defined by the width of the gap they can span to allow crossing by vehicles of specified weights and type.

No, it is there for future features, just in case.
