slowdown during artillery strikes

Im noticing a lot of choppiness during artillery strikes, almost like the frame rate drops. It reminds me of the old days when smoke used to cause a lot of graphical slowdowns when the 3D card couldn't keep up.
Is there any way to tone down or thin out the smoke?

It's possible this is happening on some cards. The smoke is composed of about 1000 billboards that run on the GPU, and on most cards it shouldn't be a problem; I can run about 80,000 billboards on my eight-year-old Nvidia GeForce without any loss of frame rate, and I don't have any problems with the smoke on that card. But it's possible some cards might experience delays with the smoke. I can look into tying the billboards to the scenery density number, so you can adjust this sort of thing.

Hmmm, let me try it on another box. I think FSAA and anisotropic filtering are on by default too so I may try turning those off and test it. But I think a user adjustment would be a good thing.
