Defending wrt modifying options

Hello,
When in defend command, how do the various switch modified the defend command, specifically engagement range assuming valid LOS.
Aggression: is it range or threat?
ROF: is is simply after they decided to fire, or does high make them more tigger happy?
I can understand ambush setting wrt range, but with attack only what is the engagement range or is it threat?
How about defend without attack or ambush work?
How about defend with attack and ambush set, seem like a yes or no with both yes and no.
