No idea what's the problem with Adobe under Win8, but I'd suggest you to upload the PDF's to Google Drive and open them directly there.

Can you find the PDF's themselves through the file explorer (or whatever ships with Win8)? Or the links accessible from the Start menu no longer work (or the links to whatever Microsoft has come up with to replace the Start menu)?

Yes, all manuals are there. And yes, Windows 8 ships with the Explorer,
I have tested it.
I can open all the respective manuals via the game menu of the games:
- Gary Grigsby's Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich
- Gary Grigsby's War in the East Series
- Scourge of War - Gettysburg
- Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue
If I try to open Adobe Reader XI via the game menu of Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge nothing happens.
After that, I also can't open Adobe Reader XI with the shortcut on my desktop anymore.
If I then open the Windows Task Manager, I see Adobe Reader XI running in the background.
If I end the task of Adobe Reader XI in the Windows Task Manager, I can open Adobe Reader XI again with using the shortcut on my desktop.

This seems to be a problem with the installer, which is Matrix staff's stuff - we have no access to it. So this needs to be 'forwarded' to them.

I've asked Matrix to investigate.

Desperate, or routinely - I don't know it anymore, I run a program called "JV 16 power Tools".
Since then, the Manual/Adobe Reader XI opens flawless from the BftB menue.
I even informyou that I use Windows 8 for several days.
Sure, I am pleased that it works again.
But why this happend - I have no idea! [&:]

I recommend to get a 3rd-party PDF-reader.
For a long time, it was possible to execute malicious code on machines running the Adobe Reader plugins. Ads and banners even on trusted websites can contain scripts that start the reader in the background and use it to inject trojans/viruses, rootkits or keyloggers. Quite some websites can't verify ad and banner content of (all of) their advertizing partners, especially since many ad services are turning to personalized/diverse ad contents these days, which leaves ppl or companies who are running websites with a shyteload of content to verify/check. Most ppl/organizations running websites don't even have the manpower to verify just parts of their partner's contents.
In your case, it seems like the pdf-extension wasn't associated to the reader anymore, or the registry entry was faulty.
