UI sluggish in Win 7

On WitP AE 1.0.6.1108r9 running under Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Service Pack 1, i3 CPU, 4 GB Ram I get very sluggish performance from the user interface. I can click a button, hear the click, and then as much as 3-4 seconds later the screen will update. This has not always been the case. I try to keep the system updated with all the MS patches. My first question does anybody know of a operating system patch that might have slowed down the response? Second, can I tweek the game in any way to work around the issue? I have seen references to performance but don't know if I can do anything here. Thanks.
