This is sort of a thought experiment for now.
I'm thinking of ways of improving these weapons. In particular I took a look at the bullets these fired. The bullet that was first used was the BS-32. It had a hardened steel core inside a softer steel sheaf. We called it APCR. In August 1942 a new bullet, BS-41, with a hard tungsten core, was accepted for service. This too could be called APCR. Since tungsten was rather rare and expensive it probably would not be the only round the gun crew carried.
What we do now is introduce a completely new gun type when the new BS-41 rounds came into service. So it only fires that type of round.
A better solution would to have some of the ammo as BS-32 and another percent the BS-41. I found someone familiar with E. Block weapons who said the BS-41 was for anti-tank use and the BS-32 for trucks, guns or half-tracks. I was thinking the new round could be 25% of the rounds available for the first 6 mos. after first introduced and then level off at at a maximum 33% after 1 year. Just a SWAG.
Since only one type of APCR is allowed for a gun, one of the two types has to be re-labeled as either APCRN or HVAP. Something that has the same variable penetration as APCR.
