In the upper right hand portion of the screen between the country icons, where it says human control/computer control etc are boxes with arrows in them click on one of these to select battle type Assault, advance, from the force you want to perform that function, and meeting engagement which put both forces on equal ground.

Tamza,
The ratio of your VPs to the opponents determines the level of victory. Against the AI, if I recall right, you need a 3 to 1 one ratio for an MV, and a 6 to 1 for DV. So, if the AI got 1000, you'd need 3000 for MV and 6000 for DV.

Human vs computer
More than 1-3 Decisive Loss
1-3 to 3-1 Draw
3-1 to 7-1 Minor victory
7-1 Higher Major victory
The odds vs human player are a little lower. This is due to the predictable action of the AI in computer generated battles.

1-2 to 2-1 Draw
2-1 to 6-1 Minor victory
6-1 Higher Major victory
