Why are they randomly assigned to brigades in detailed combat ? Is there a way to assign your 1 star generals to specific brigades ? It is very strange to have the stonewall brigade commanded by some random general and not Jackson.

Unfortunately, no. The 1 and 2 star general is assigned to any one unit in their division, a 3 star to any unit in his corps and a 4 star to any brigade in the army.
This can also cause some dangerous situations, as leader casualties are calculated by the amount of troops in their brigade. The lower the amount of troops in the brigade, the higher the chance of the leader getting injured.
