I know when I play Germans to have Liszt's Les Preludes playing in the background, but if I need a break, perhaps I can fill in with Siegfried's Funeral March or something else from Wagner. What am I to play to get myself in the mood when purporting to be Japanese?

Try Holst's The Planets, specifically Mars, the Bringer of War. Turn up the volume a bit. [:)]

Something brassy and ominous. Holst's Mars is 9 minutes long.
Or you could load up the sound track for PTO2... Sometimes, I swear I hear that playing underneath the WITP music while doing orders.
EDIT: Ninjaed. Great minds think alike? I would avoid some of the movements of Planets, though. It's been a while since I listened, but I think there are only 1 or 2 others that would work... several are high and "flighty"/more jovial. Saturn would be another one that would work, kinda.
EDIT 2: Another one that I've played is "Mother Earth" by David Maslanka. It's similar-ish to Holst's Mars. You could also try Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain", which I'm sure many of us would recognize from Fantasia (...classic animation).
The trouble with this topic is that Japan doesn't have as much of a storied history in composition as Germany does. As recorded by history, anyway, especially from the 16th-19th centuries.

If you want a Japanese composition from the time period, you could try looking for composers from this list who were born before 1910 or so:

Of course, WWII Japanese military marches, like "Arawashi No Uta" or "Chizome No Denrei".

Glad to see I'm not the only person who hears that music in their head while playing.

I really like the new Battlestar Galactica piece 'Storming New Caprica.' It does, after all, have those magnificent Japanese drums banging away for about 7 minutes of solid sound.

What about that Stringy Japanese music that plays in the backgound of the Rising Sun scenerios of John Tillers Campaign Series.

Non-Deutsch speaking Americans can have trouble understanding the Panzerlied lyrics:

You guys are too upper-crust for me. If I am listening to music and not talk-radio while playing (nearly always listen to coast-to-coast after midnight), it is usually classic rock like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd or something of that era.

Feltan
