British CVE problem

British CVE with sqns on board in CV or CVE TFs do not fly any air missions, not even defend themselves against air attacks. Is this just my impression, misleading VCR or is this a bug?
Is there a way to make them fly?
Any suggestions [&o]

Campaign 1942 Version 3.2
Do you put them in Escort CVTF? Tired that and did not work.

An escort TV TF is still an air combat TF; like Amph, cargo and the other variations it's there to help the computer pick the correct sort of ships if you use automatic ship selection.
I only play scenario 15. All I can say is the RN CVEs seem to be harder to keep replenished than the USN ones. Have you changed the captains and TF admirals to ones with better air ratings?

It should but didn't and yes, I had good admirals in charge

All I can say is send me a save and I'll have a look.

Interesting. I couldn't tell you if I have the problem or not, for I try never to expose British CVE's to air attack. (For one thing, I move fairly aggressively, and kamikazes come on line early.)

Thanks for the offer Ian but it is a PBEM game, not sure if you can see anything.
The VCR is useless too as it shows FOW plain wrong battles

Zeke:
I've had the same problem. What makes me MORE nuts is that they do, occasionally, launch airstrikes against bases - but ONLY with the torpedo bombers.
(FWIW, I generally run the Guadalcanal campaign scenario and play on from that point...)

Try putting them in a hex by themselves with no other TFs.
In turn X I had all 4 RN CVE TFs, and 6 or 7 USN ones sitting off Aomori, which is being assaulted by US 1st Army from the south. The USN flew, but not the RN.
On X+1, I moved them into their own hex and targeted their squadrons en masse on Ominato.
Et voila:
Day Air attack on 77th Division, at 70,38
Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 2
Ki-102a Randy x 2
Allied aircraft
Seafire x 10
Wildcat V x 157
Hellcat II x 35
Firefly x 9
Barracuda x 78
Avenger II x 116
No Japanese losses
Allied aircraft losses
Wildcat V: 3 destroyed
Japanese ground losses:
166 casualties reported
Guns lost 5
Aircraft Attacking:
7 x Wildcat V bombing at 2000 feet
6 x Barracuda bombing at 4000 feet
7 x Hellcat II bombing at 2000 feet
9 x Avenger II bombing at 4000 feet
[snip]
10 x Seafire bombing at 2000 feet
[snip]
9 x Firefly bombing at 2000 feet
etc

Hi Ian, your report does NOT look like Pacific War with the attack hights, are you sure about it?
In my game the Brit CVE fly NO air missions. However, they can be used like the empty US Cassablanca CVEs and in a TTF. After loading a sqn, this will do CAPs.
Took me a while and the loss of 4 CVEs to learn that [:@][:@][:@]

Are we talking WITP or Pacwar?

So it is.
Well in that case all those RN CVEs without air groups are useful only for replenshiment TFs; when they load supply points on formation of the TF they are loading replacement aircraft out of the pool which then go into the air groups of a replenishing air combat TF. The only other use is transporting land based air groups, but by the time you get them most allied aircraft have the range to base hop to where you need them.
I haven't played Pacwar for a few years, but don't recall a problem with the RN CVEs with assigned air groups flying; I used to always play the whole war though, not the later start scenarios, in which a lot of lost allied units have been deleted from the database and things moved around.
Have a look at the groups' data with pacedit if you have it and see if there's a problem with the type of planes on board - only certain data lines in the aircraft database are hardwired for carrier capability. There are also a number of air group data slots that were hardwired to certain ship data slots, and any scenario edits had to adhere to those. I made a list of them 20 years ago, can't find it now, but basically they cement the historical IJN and allied carrier airgroups from the original campaign scenario carriers to those ships and cannot be used for anything else, although other air group data slots can be used on other (and those) ships and work if you use carrier capable aircraft in the group.

Interesting. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
