Is it possible to show how deep it is to the layer actually.

This would indeed be a nice addition....please add it to the list of feature requests for later..

You do know you can see this in the second line of your mouse's black/white datablock when you're mousing over the water.

If you look at the buttons below it also allows you to set above or below.
