Changing Silhouttes

I know there will be modding info coming out in the future but I have a question as to how the game looks at the silhouettes and applies them.
I wanted the change the "LEO1A2" .bmp in the common folder. I didn't want the main gun pointing in the air so I edited it to show level. The edit went without problem and the edited silhouette showed up fine in the editor.
The one strange thing is that I was playing the "KG Rommel" scenario the Leopard 1A2's were still showing the original version with the cannon pointing upward. However if I edit my own scenario with the Leopard 1A2's or 1A3's my edited version shows up.
Does each scenario retain a memory for the graphics so that they can't be changed once the scenario has started?
